Quick and easy Cheesy Chicken Stuffing Casserole is always a hit for a family dinner. Tender, juicy chicken breasts that are topped with Mozzarella cheese and stuffing mix. Make this easy dinner recipe tonight!
Here’s a fun fact: I love stuffing! Especially my delicious Crock Pot Stuffing that’s been handed down from my Aunt. I’m kind of high maintenance when it comes to stuffing, but not in the way you think. I don’t like complicated stuffing recipes with all kinds of different flavors. Nope. Traditional homemade stuffing for me all the way!
But let’s face it. We aren’t about to make a turkey and stuffing dinner every time we are craving a little stuffing. It’s just not realistic, right?
So because I just can’t wait for a holiday to indulge my stuffing cravings, I came up with this cheesy chicken stuffing casserole to get me through the rest of the year!
This delicious stuffing casserole recipe is one of my favorite chicken recipes because it’s perfect when you are craving stuffing and comfort food but are pushed for time. For example, every night of my life!
Why This Recipe Works
- You only need six ingredients to make it and we’re using a stuffing mix to make it really easy. It’s the perfect weeknight dinner!
- There are no pre-cooking steps – everything is assembled in a baking dish and then you just pop it in the oven! It only takes 15 minutes to make and then the rest of the time is for baking.
- It reminds me of a holiday meal, but so much easier to make. Plus, it’s cheesy, and what’s not to love about that?
This chicken stuffing casserole is the best comfort food dinner ever with cozy, delicious flavors! My family loves when I make it. Yours will, too!
Ingredients
- Canned cream of chicken soup – or try cream of mushroom soup to change the flavor!
- Milk – 2% works great or for a richer sauce use whole milk.
- Mozzarella cheese slices
- Dry stuffing mix – you only need the mix, no need to prepare it first!
- Butter – This will be need to be melted, we used salted butter, but if you’d like to cut back on sodium use unsalted. Either will work.
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts – You can also use boneless skinless chicken thighs.
How to Make It
Preheat oven to 350°F and spray a square baking dish with cooking spray and set it aside.
Combine the soup and milk in a medium bowl.
Place the chicken breasts in the prepared casserole dish. Pour the soup mixture over the top. Layer the cheese slices on the top and then sprinkle the stuffing over the cheese. Pour the melted butter over the stuffing mix.
Bake the casserole for one hour or until the chicken is cooked through (165°F) and the stuffing is golden brown.
Side Dish Ideas!
This creamy chicken casserole is a hearty and filling main dish so I like to pair it with a lighter side dish. Here are some ideas.
- Air Fryer Broccoli or Asparagus are super easy vegetable side dishes!
- For something a little fancier, try my Bacon Wrapped Green Beans.
- Roasted Cauliflower or Glazed Carrots are also great veggies to serve with it.
Recipe Variations
Meat: Instead of chicken breasts try using chicken thighs. Or do a combination of both to mix it up.
Stuffing Mix: There are several brands to choose from, so try your favorite! Be sure to buy stuffing mix that includes all the seasonings.
Soup: Cream of chicken, cream of mushroom soup, or cream of celery soup all work well!
Cheese: Any good melting cheese will work in this dish! Instead of sliced mozzarella, try cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, Gruyere, or Provolone.
If you’re on team stuffing with me, you have to try this cheesy chicken stuffing casserole! It’s the best way to satisfy a comfort food craving with hardly any work. I know you will love it!

This recipe is so easy and delicious! It is one of my go to recipes for sure. The only con for me is that it is high in sodium which I need to watch so, I just use low salt cream of chicken soup and low sodium stuffing mix.

Wonderful! Great ways to adjust this for your diet and I think I’ll do that too!
Megan says
Don’t cook for an hour. It’s totally burnt… chicken cooked great though!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is so easy, fast and delicious. My husband is not a great casserole lover but he did enjoy this and I really did. I used thin sliced chicken so it cut down cooking time and I made sure I checked the internal temp of chicken before enjoying. Did add a sprinkle of house seasoning and some dried parsley on top of herbed stuffing and shredded cheese because it is what I had. Will try sliced next time. Delicious! Thank you again. Will be enjoyed often in this home.
Julie Evink says
So glad you enjoyed it and could use what you had at home already to prepare it!
Jessica says
Made this tonight for dinner. AMAZING!!!! So delicious. Cut up the chicken so it’s easier to eat. Also seasoned the chicken with my everything seasonings. Montreal steak and lawry’s. Made rice for a side, but it also goes really good as the base of the dish. Definitely going to be making this dish more often
Julie says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Ashley says
Can you use cream of mushroom?
Julie says
Yep that will be fine!
Betsy says
This looks great! Just checking, the stuffing, it isn’t cooked before I put it on top, correct? Just dry mixed right?
Thanks!
Julie says
Correct! Just sprinkle the dry mixture over the top.

A different version of this recipe uses Monterey Jack cheese sliced 1/4 inch slices.. 1/3 Cup dry white wine + 1/3 Cup milk whisked into soup. One packaged herb seasoned stuffing. Crumbs not cubes. Pour the soup mixture over top of stuffing evenly. Cover tightly bake about 20 minutes. Remove foil, gently & lightly toss stuffing to evenly moisten w/ soup mixture. Continue baking till chicken done & stuffing is lightly browned & crisped.

Thanks for sharing!

If you are doubling the recipe, could you use a different size baking dish? Or would that effect the cook time?
Julie says
You can use a bigger baking dish, the cook time should be about the same, just make sure to check the temp of your chicken, 165 degrees is done.
Christine says
Can this casserole be frozen? And if so, before or after baking. Thank you. Helping to make dinners for my daughter after her baby is born.
Julie says
I haven’t tried freezing this one but I think you could. I would freeze it before baking.
Sandy says
Can you use chicken thighs instead of breast (dark meat family)
Julie says
Yes! I’ve actually made it with chicken thighs before and it works just fine! Follow the recipe the same way.
Sharon Seiber says
Sounds like it has everything my family loves! I do have a question…I have swiss slices or grated mozzarella but no mozzarella slices. Should I hold off making this for now or use what I have? What do you think?
Julie says
I think either would be fine! You could sprinkle the grated mozzarella or use the swiss slices.
Rachell says
This dish reminded me of my Grandma’s chicken casserole. It had good flavor. I doubled the recipe to have leftovers. The only concern was it came out pretty soupy and not thick like I thought it would.
I wonder do I add less milk?
Anyone else have that problem?
Julie Evink says
I would add a little less milk to make it thicker!
Gladys says
I it and my family love it
Julie says
Happy to hear it!
Elizabeth says
Do you put the seasoning from the stovetop on the stuffing ?
Julie says
Yes, if they aren’t combined already mix all the packets from the stuffing mix and then sprinkle onto the chicken.
leann says
bake covered or uncovered ?
Julie Evink says
Uncovered!
Adele Aiken says
If you use 2 cans of the soup, do you put them both over the chicken or put one over the stuffing?
Julie says
I’d put them both over the chicken and keep the stuffing on top.
