I live in Minnesota and we grow up on casseroles around here, but we fondly refer to them as “Hot Dishes”. It’s slightly confusing having to change my words to speak other people’s languages I’ve found out.
Henceforth the whole “Supper” vs “Dinner” debate. In the Midwest we refer to dinner as supper. I started doing this because when I write for the blog I now call it dinner. My poor family started having to question when exactly I wanted to have them come over. Now, when you say dinner do you mean like noon or 6:00 pm Julie was often a big question. I went back to calling it “supper”.
Then I went to a blogging conference this past weekend and I kept asking when we were going to “Supper”. They sure had a giggle over that one! They said let’s go to supper and get some pop. Aren’t they funny!
For those of you who don’t know it we call “soda” pop. Sigh. Language is confusing!
You know what’s not confusing? This delicious Ham and Cheese Casserole with Noodles! It’s so easy, cheesy and delicious. It was a hit at our dinner table and it’s perfect for using up leftover ham from the holidays.
How Do I Make Ham and Noodle Casserole?
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Set aside.
- Prepare elbow macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
- Meanwhile, combine cheeses and reserve 1/2 c. for later. Whisk soup, sour cream, milk and seasonings together in a large bowl. Add ham, 1 1/2 c. of cheese and pasta. Stir until combined. Pour into prepared dish.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and top with reserved cheese. Return to the oven for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Tips for Making Cheesy Ham and Noodle Casserole!
- Buy blocks of cheese and then grate them yourself. This will provide that super melty cheese you want!
- Don’t have cream of cheddar soup? You can substitute cream of chicken soup
- Need to sneak some veggies in? Add 1-2 cups of your favorite veggies
- You can also use egg noodles instead of elbow macaroni
- Did you have leftovers? If it gets a little dry just stir in some milk and it will be back to the cheesy goodness you got the first time

Is there 767 calories in a serving or the whole casserole? How many servings do you think might be in this?
Julie Evink says
It’s for 6 very large servings, but I think you could easily get 8 out of it.
Julie says
Everyone loved it my son had 3 servings and dad had 2. Even our 5 year old grandson loved it. Very easy to make. Thank you.

Loving the idea of this recipe, especially since I’m home sick in bed. That being said I have everything at hone except the cheese soup, do have velveeta… can I substitute and if so how to prepare…. thanks for your help!
Julie says
Well, I have never tested it with velveeta but I think you could make it work. Try using 1/4 block of velveeta and melt it, then stir in the sour cream, milk and seasonings. That should work for your cheese mixture, then follow the rest of the directions as is. Let me know how it turns out!

This is such a wonderful hot Dish! I live i n MN too. I confuse my poor family who live in British Columbia when I refer to the midday meal as dinner and the evening meal as supper. They call it lunch and supper. In rural southern MN “ a little lunch” usually refers to a snack?
I grew up in Canada and the dinner/supper/ lunch thing is still hard for me to get used to…but I’ve finally starting to adapt and I’ve been here since 2001!
Anyway, great recipe…great comfort food!
Julie Evink says
Oh I love this! It sure put a smile on my face 🙂

I love this casserole! I’ve made it with cheddar cheese soup, cream of chicken, and cream of mushroom, and I didn’t really notice a difference between each finished casserole although they were separated by several months. I prefer rotini pasta, and 12 oz is a better amount for that (maybe it swells up more when cooked??). I also increase the sour cream to 1 cup, and the milk to half a cup, I add a sautéed onion to the sauce mix, and I add parsley and a tiny bit of paprika. Once when I was determined to use up all the leftover ham, I ended up putting 3 cups of chopped ham in–and it was too much for my taste, although my husband loved the extra meatiness!
Julie Evink says
I LOVE this! I’m so glad you could adapt it to your taste buds!
Anne says
Can you freeze this?
Julie Evink says
Yes I think that would work just fine.
Dorothy says
Easy to make and tasted good.

When I lived in Northern Nebraska we called it hot dishes as well but then I moved and everyone called it casseroles. I also call “dinner” “supper” except for on the blog, lol!! I think we have always called it “pop” but I did have a roommate that called it a “cola”. I love comforting dishes like these and so does my family!!
Julie Evink says
Maybe we should go back to what we call it and transform the world 😉
Melissa Howell says
Hey, I grew up in Utah, and we call “soda” pop, too! Also, I’m going to start calling casseroles “hot dishes.” My youngest daughter says she hates casseroles. Maybe I can trick her into eating them if I call them “hot dishes” instead! It’s worth a try!
Julie Evink says
LOL! It’s always worth a try!
Danielle Green says
This looks like a great potluck dish!
Julie Evink says
Got that right!
