One bowl Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is my favorite quick and easy banana bread recipe that is loaded with chocolate chips. It’s moist, has tons of flavor from ripe bananas and is the best treat ever.

There’s nothing I love better than low-maintenance baking like this super moist and super easy banana and chocolate chip bread. Quick breads are great for any time of year, but I especially like to bake them for the kids’ school lunches.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- This is the best way to use those overripe bananas that are taking up precious freezer space!
- Chocolate chip banana bread freezes well so you can save some for another time.
- You only need to use one bowl to mix up the batter so there is less mess to clean up when you’re all done.
I always have to add chocolate chips to banana bread! Love this recipe!! Thanks!
Ingredients For Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
- Sugar – Use white granulated sugar in this recipe.
- Butter – Softened butter will cream best with the sugar. If you are in a pinch, you can use vegetable or canola oil here instead.
- Eggs – Room temperature, whole eggs act as a binder and add fat.
- Ripe bananas – Overripe bananas offer the most flavor. Make sure if you’ve taken them out of the freezer that they are thawed and room temperature.
- Flour – Use a regular, all-purpose flour for this delicious treat.
- Baking soda – Acts as a rising agent.
- Salt – This will balance the flavors of the chocolate chip banana bread.
- Mini chocolate chips – Regular chocolate chips will sink to the bottom of your banana bread, so I recommend using mini chocolate chips in this recipe. If you only have regular sized chocolate chips, toss them in flour before folding them into the batter to prevent them from sinking.
Can Frozen Bananas Be Used For Baking?
Yes, you can use frozen bananas for this recipe. Freezing ripe bananas is a great way to keep them on hand longer for recipes like this.
Peel the bananas and wrap them in plastic wrap before storing them in a freezer safe container. They will keep for two to three months.
When you want to use them for banana bread, just thaw them for a bit at room temperature or leave them in the fridge overnight.
How To Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Cream sugar and butter together for about 2 minutes. Add eggs and bananas and mix until combined.
Add the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix until just combined.
Fold the mini chocolate chips into the batter.
Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Top the batter with more mini chocolate chips.
Bake the banana bread for one hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or until a cake tester comes out clean. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.
Pro Tips
- You can use this batter to bake muffins. I like to bake muffins at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for 15-18 minutes.
- If you don’t have any toothpicks to check the bread’s doneness, insert a thin knife or use visual cues like a golden brown crust or the bread pulling away from the sides of the pan.
- Walnuts are a great addition to the top of your banana bread, too.
Storage
Store leftover chocolate chip banana bread at room temperature in an airtight container up to 4 days. You may want to lay down a piece of paper towel to absorb any extra moisture.
Freezer: You can freeze any leftover chocolate chip banana bread, too. Freeze in individual slices wrapped in plastic wrap for easy access. Thaw in the fridge overnight or on the counter for about 30 minutes.
Why Is My Banana Bread Flat?
- It’s not fully baked. Be sure to check the doneness with either a toothpick or cake tester. You should check for doneness in the center of the banana bread. Under baked banana bread can fall flat after it cools.
- Be sure to accurately measure the wet ingredients. Banana bread that is too moist might turn out flat.
- Has your baking soda expired? Baking soda is what gives this bread it’s lift, so if it’s expired it won’t rise as much or at all. Also, don’t substitute baking powder in this recipe otherwise the banana bread may not turn out the way it’s supposed to.
- Did you substitute a different kind of flour? I’ve only tested this recipe with all-purpose flour. Other types of flour may not work as well and could result in your banana bread being flat.
Are you ready to give your tried and true banana bread a chocolate upgrade? I know you are going to love this chocolate chip banana bread recipe.

Is it one cup sugar?

Yes so sorry it’s updated! Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Could I make this exact recipe and pour into muffin pans instead of a loaf pan?
Julie Evink says
Yes the cooking time will be less. I like to cook my muffins at 425 degrees F for 5 minutes then reduce the temp to 350 degrees F and cook for 15-18 minutes. That gives you those nice tall peaks in your muffin!
