There’s never a bad time to grab your favorite crackers and chips and make a creamy dip that the whole family will enjoy! And if you don’t want to share and keep the whole bowl to yourself instead, I won’t tell!
Why You’ll Love Crack Dip
- One can never have too many easy dips for chips. This super simple crack dip recipe is a great recipe to store in your back pocket, then quickly make whenever you need it!
- Make this recipe in just 10 minutes. For best results, refrigerate it before serving but if you dig right in after making it I won’t judge.
- This is a great make-ahead recipe for parties and get-togethers. Since it’s best to chill it before serving, you can make it ahead of time and then serve whenever you’re ready!
Ingredients for Crack Dip
- Bacon bits – You can either use store-bought bacon bits or make some delicious oven-baked bacon and chop it up into little pieces. If you use store bought make sure you get the real bacon bits and not bacos.
- Sour cream – Even if you’re not a fan of sour cream, it seems to be a staple in so many dip ideas for chips. Trust me on this one, by the time you mix all of these ingredients together the sour cream will be unrecognizable!
- Shredded cheddar cheese – For extra tasty flavor, shred your own cheese. You can use mild cheddar cheese or sharp cheddar cheese, whichever you prefer.
- Ranch dressing mix – If you want to make this delicious dip recipe for chips and crackers, but don’t have a packet of ranch seasoning on hand, then you can make homemade ranch seasoning! There’s about two tablespoons in one packet of ranch mix. So make your own and scoop to big ol’ tablespoons into the crack dip.

What to Serve with this Crack Dip Recipe
While this is one of my favorite dip recipes to dip tortilla chips, potato chips and crackers in, you can also dip tons of other stuff in it! Serve with fresh crunchy veggies like carrots, broccoli, cucumber slices, celery sticks and even bell pepper sticks. You can dip pita chips pita bread in this chip, and even spread it on top of a jalapeño popper.
I’ve even been known to dip french fries and fried pickles into crack dip too! It’s so yummy, it goes with anyhting!
Crack dip can go on sandwiches as an extra creamy condiment, and would pair so well alongside ham and cheese sliders. If you’re serving game-day chicken wings, make a batch of crack dip for sure! The creamy dip with a saucy wing is so good.

What can I add to crack dip?
Just like many other easy dip recipes, you can customize this snack however you’d like. Here are some of our favorite variations.
Corn would be great mixed in with these creamy ingredients, and even make it spicy by adding some green chiles. For a protein boost, mix in some cooked pork sausage!
I use green onions as a garnish, but you can absolutely dice some up and mix them into the crack dip. Really, add anything you want to this creamy dip!
Pro Tips for the Best Crack Dip
- Plan ahead and make your dip in enough time to chill it before serving. It really does help the flavors meld together and make the dish just that much better!
- For extra layers of flavor, use multiple different types of cheddar cheese.
- Make sure all of the bacon bits and cheese are well incorporated into the sour cream. Stir together until the dip has an even distribution of fillings.

This is HANDS-DOWN my go to dip! I always have Costco real bacon bits, their Mexican blend cheese and a jar or ranch powder on hand. All I have to do is get the sour cream the day before and leave it over night. Here’s the BEST part… after you mix it, put it back into the original sour cream container. This creates two wonderful outcomes. 1. It doesn’t all fit, so you can put the excess in a separate container to keep for yourself! 2. You can leave the container at the party and not waste a Tupperware.
This is my favorite dip!

Great tips! So glad you are enjoying it!
Debbie says
Why not bacon bits in a jar?
Julie Evink says
Because those are dry and crunch and I prefer regular bacon. You can try them if you’d like!
Dawn says

I did not use the bacon bits either. Thank You! for sharing😊

Sounds great!
Drema Lanham says
I have not made this dip yet but I’m going to soon. I dont get the salty part! Your recipe only calls for (1) one packet of Ranch dressing mix not 2! Does no one read the ingredients or follow directions??? I’m sorry but I see this all the time. People should follow directions as they are posted. If they dont like it then they can do their own thing with the recipe.
SORRY FOR THE RANT. I’ll let u know how I like it when I make your crack dip. Thanks for the recipe.
Julie says
I appreciate the rant, Drema! I hope you enjoy the dip, it is one of our favorites!

My granddaughter made crack dip for her gender reveal, but she used cream cheese, sausage and rotel in hers. I’m not sure where she got the recipe.
Julie Evink says
I’m sorry I’m not sure where that came from!
Melinda says
That’s actually white trash dip… just google it, it comes right up,,, delicious!
Lisa says
Are the bacon bits in a package the artificial kind? I cant seem to find them.
Julie says
You should be able to find “real bacon” in a packet. If not, you could always cook real bacon and crumble it.
Joaquín Guzmán Loera says
I am not understanding the name this dish has? What is cracked? No eggs cracked….maybe I am missing something. Please help

Crack refers to the drug crack cocaine! Lol… Meaning this is so good you’ll get ‘hooked’!

It is addicted like crack so the play means so good.

Made this last night to take upstairs to my favorite neighbor in my condo. Three of us demolished the whole thing, then were too full for her dinner!! Too bad, your dip was better anyway, worth it according to friend! Went well with white wine, but would go with ANYTHING!! Thanks, Julie.
Laverne (the 87 yr old, still eating heartily)
Julie Evink says
Laverne I love all your comments. You always put a smile on my face! Love that you enjoyed it with white wine 🙂 Have a great Thanksgiving!

Beth says
I love the name by the way but I do have a question. I buy the big bottle of ranch dressing powder mix how much do you suggest I use? Thanks!
Julie Evink says
About two tablespoons!
Jmm says
DO NOT USE 2 pks of ranch dressing. It’s so salty I’m not sure if I can even serve it. Scrambling to find something to add to cut it. Wish I would have read the comments:(
Julie Evink says
I’m sorry you had difficulties with this. I’ve made if for years like this and never had a complaint, but different tastebuds find different flavors salty 🙁
LS says
Even 1 package of ranch powder mix is too salty but it is delicious.
Jenny says
This dip is amazing! So easy to make too. I made it the night before a cookout, and everyone was asking for the recipe. Be sure to add the ranch by taste to reduce the saltiness. I only used a little over half the amount.
