This Easy Skillet Beef Pot Pie Recipe is the ultimate comfort food dinner recipe made easy! You’ll love this hearty, cozy dinner – it’s sure to be a hit with the whole family!

And, yes, it’s EASY! Maybe pot pie isn’t something you think you can have on the table in about 30 minutes, but this skillet pot pie is just that. You don’t even have to make pie crust because we are taking a shortcut and using canned store-bought biscuits!
This cozy skillet ground beef pot pie is filled with quick-cooking ground beef and hearty vegetables, all mixed in an easy homemade gravy and topped with biscuits. Plus, it’s made in one skillet!
It’s right up there with my other easy comforting dishes like: Upside Down Pizza Casserole, Easy Taco Soup, Chile Con Queso Mac and Cheese. These are the kind of meals my family devours! You’re going to love it!
Why You’ll Love this Skillet Ground Beef Pot Pie
- You will love how easy it is to make this ground beef pot pie! The prep time goes quickly and then it’s in the oven baking to perfection.
- The best part about this recipe is that it’s a one-pan meal. Dinner will be on the table in no time with hardly any clean-up after the fact!
- Instead of simmering tougher cuts of meat like traditional beef pot pies, this uses ground beef which cuts down the cook time drastically!
Ingredients for Skillet Ground Beef Pot Pie
- Ground beef – I like to use leaner ground beef so that the filling is not too greasy. You could also use ground turkey or ground chicken if you’d like.
- Chopped onion – White, yellow, or red onion are fine. Grab the frozen diced onion and keep it in the freezer!
- Garlic – Minced garlic cloves add so much flavor to this easy ground beef pot pie.
- All-purpose flour – Make the homemade gravy with all purpose flour.
- Milk – For a more rich gravy use whole milk. You can use 2% if you prefer!
- Beef broth – For a more flavorful gravy use beef stock. If you are watching your sodium intake them grab the low sodium beef broth.
- Canned mixed vegetables – Grab a can that is a mix of carrots, peas, potatoes and corn.
- Canned biscuits – You could also top it with a layer of crescent rolls or puff pastry to give it more of the pot pie feel.
- Herbs – Dried thyme or fresh thyme leaves give it so much flavor!

Other Options for the Crust: Instead of biscuits, you can use refrigerated crescent roll dough or even thawed puff pastry sheets. Or, pick up a refrigerated pie crust – just be sure to cut slits in the top before you bake the pot pie. Homemade biscuit dough works great too!
Other Options for the Vegetables: Instead of canned feel free to use frozen vegetables. You will need about three cups and you don’t need to thaw them first.
How to Make Pot Pie in a Skillet
- In a large oven-safe skillet, brown the ground beef with the diced onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain off the excess fat if needed.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to combine. Then stir in the milk and broth and simmer until the liquid is thickened.
- Add in the vegetables and then place the biscuits on top. You can leave them whole or cut them into smaller pieces before placing them on top. Sprinkle the thyme over the top.
- Place the skillet pot pie in the oven and bake it for 20 minutes at 400°F or until the biscuits are golden.
I don’t have an oven-safe skillet. What else can I use?
You can make the pot pie filling in a skillet and then transfer it to a casserole dish. Cover it with the biscuits and bake it as instructed. A dutch oven would work as well!
What else can I add to beef pot pie?
Mushrooms would taste delicious in the ground beef pot pie! You can also add other herbs like fresh parsley or dried herbs like oregano. Sometimes I add a few tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce to amp up the savory flavor!
Or kick up the veggies a bit and either add extras of the ones the recipe calls for, or mix in different vegetables like celery or green beans.
How to Store Leftover Ground Beef Pot Pie
FRIDGE: Transfer leftovers to an airtight container and they will keep for up to three days in the refrigerator. The biscuit topping might soften, but it will still be delicious!
FREEZER: It actually freezes pretty well too! Just place leftovers in a freezer safe container and freeze for 2-3 months. Thaw before reheating.
How to reheat leftover pot pie
For best results, reheat in the oven. This will help the biscuit topping crisp back up a bit.
What to Serve with Beef Pot Pie
Serve this dish with classic cozy sides like green beans with bacon, roasted broccoli, or creamy mashed potatoes.
Glazed carrots and salad are also tasty veggie sides to serve with this delicious dish!
Pro Tips for the Best Beef Pot Pie
- Use lean ground beef so that the filling for your pot pie isn’t too greasy!
- For an add tasty bonus, melt some butter and brush it on top of the biscuits while they are still warm.
- Allow the pot pie to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This will let the filling set a bit and it won’t be super runny when you serve it.
You will love how easy it is to make pot pie with ground beef! Not to mention it’s a one-pan meal – dinner will be on the table in no time with hardly any clean-up. I know you will love it as much as we do – enjoy!
