It’s a bitterly cold winter here in Minnesota. I mean our winters are always freezing, but this winter well it’s beyond freezing. The pathetic thing is I think I’m begining to acclimate to it. It’s amazing how 30 degrees feels TERRIBLE in the fall and in the spring it’s a heat wave. Break out the shorts my friends! Summer is here!

Are a few of your nodding your head in agreement? While more of you are going, “Why on earth do you live in that tundra?” I might be with the latter of you. Family. That’s the only reason I’m here!


To combat the colder winter days and nights I have a few tricks up my sleeves….

#1. Dress appropriately – I’ve been wondering if I can find fleece lined dress pants lately…man the wind whips through dress pants

#2. Stay indoors – Yes, I’ve become a hermit. I’m ok with it.

#3. Build big, roaring fires – I love my fireplace

#4. HOT showers – Sometimes it’s the only way to take the chill out of your bones.

#5. HUGE bowls of Chili – Duh…you knew food was going to be in there sometime!

This amazing chili recipe came from a dear friend of mine, who got it from a co-worker and she kept raving about this chili. I figured I must try it right? I made the mistake of making it while I had morning sickness with Miss K. Let’s just say by the time I was done smelling it and making it I think I had two bites and couldn’t look at it. Fast forward two years later and I was finally able to stomach the thought of it again! WOW I’m glad I tried it again. It’s simply amazing. It will quickly become your family’s go-to recipe for chili! The secret….cumin.

Crock Pot Famous Chili

Prep Time 20 minutes Cook Time 8 hours Serves 12 servings     adjust servings


  • 3 lbs hamburger, browned
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 (30 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15.5 oz) can chili beans
  • 2 c. water
  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 4 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp oregano


  1. In a large Crock Pot mix all ingredients together.
  2. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  3. Top with sour cream and cheese if desired.


Recipe Notes

*For Stove Top - In a large pot mix together browned hamburger, tomatoes, onion, tomato sauce, chili beans and water. Simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally. After a hour add chili powder, garlic salt, cumin and oregano. Simmer for an additional 2 hours. Top with sour cream and cheese if desired.

      The beans are canned and do not drain the tomatoes!

    Could I leave out the onion? Also, could I just add everything together vs waiting the 1hr to add the spices and the another 2hrs before serving? Last minute pumpkin carving party left me with very little time lol

      Yes you can leave out the onion and it’s fine to only cook 2 hours. Longer cooking just lets the spices meld a little better!

    Hello Julie,

    This recipe looks great! I am going to try it on Friday. I am having about 6 people coming over. Is it okay if I just make it with 2 pounds of meat? If I do, do I need to reduce all of the other ingredients?

      You can add less meat but the chili won’t be as thick and hearty. I’ve had other people adjust to just the two pounds of hamburger before and it’s fine!

    I made this chilli yesterday it was so good. Entering it in a chilli cookoff tomorrow. But I tweeked it a little and instead of the second xan of chilli I added a can of rotel. It is awesome.

      Hi Jazmine! I just freeze mine in containers the portion size of what I want and then either let it thaw in the fridge or heat it on the stove top from frozen!

    Thanks for the great recipe. Just making it for supper and with my first taste test I know it’s the recipe I’ve been looking for. We eat ours over rice and top with sour cream and cheese. Leftovers are mixed in and put into tortillas. Yum, from Minnesota 🙂

    I’d give this a 3/5 star rating because ours was practically Mac and cheese with some beef. We added noodles and I don’t think we added enough seasoning because ours was a little bland.

    I made this chili for culinary class and it was okay. I would probably give it 3/5 stars. We tried to serve ours over noodles because it wasn’t liquidy enough. It didn’t have that much flavor, but I think thats because we did not use a crock pot and we did not let it simmer for an hour.

    I give this a 3 out of 5 star rating. The recipe was very simple and easy. The one thing that I didn’t like about it was it was very thick not liquidy at all. It was lots of hamburger meat than liquids. I would add more variety of beans as well.
