Ditch the box mix and make Beer Bread from scratch with this easy and delicious recipe! This quick bread only has six ingredients and can be whipped together in a bowl with a spoon. We love dipping it into dip because it’s a dense bread and holds up well. The crust is the best part!
Nothing is better than homemade bread, right? English Muffin Bread, Rosemary Bread or even some yummy Homemade Breadsticks the whole house smells great when it’s baking BUT homemade bread takes forever, right?
Well no more! Beer Bread is quick and easy to make!
I love the texture of this bread. It’s slightly dense and hearty but yet still moist and delicious.
I love dipping it into my favorite Dill Veggie Dip. The combo of this homemade beer bread and the spread or dip is perfect when I have a girls night.
Why this recipe works:
- Only 6 Ingredients
- Hearty and perfect for dipping
- 5 Minutes of Prep Time
- No yeast, so anyone can make it
- No kneading or rising time
Only 6 Ingredients
- Flour – We have always used all-purpose in this recipe.
- Sugar – You could use honey instead if you prefer.
- Baking powder – This helps the bread rise.
- Salt – I use kosher salt.
- Beer – Grab your favorite beer and use it in this bread, the darker the beer the more beer flavor you will have in the bread.
- Butter – I use salted butter.
3 Steps to Prepare
- Mix Batter – Combine flour, sugar, baking powder salt and beer in a large bowl. This will be sticky.
- Pour – Place dough in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan. Pour melted butter on top.
- Bake – Place loaf pan in preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 50-60 minutes.
(Detailed recipe instructions and ingredient amounts included in the full recipe below.)
Variations Ideas
- Garlic – Mince a few cloves of garlic and mix into the batter for a garlic flavor.
- Cheese – Add in a cup of shredded cheese to the batter. This could be any type of cheese like cheddar or pepper jack.
- Herbs – Mince some fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme. Dried herbs will also work. Just add either into the batter.
- Spice – Want a kick to your beer bread? Add in sliced jalapenos or green chilies and cheddar cheese for a fun twist.
Serving Ideas
- Along side of a hearty stew, soup or chili to dunk in.
- Topped with butter and honey
- Topped with butter and jam.
- Served along side of a pot roast
- Served with a dip like Dill Veggie Dip.
Expert Tips
- Does it taste like beer? Yes! Buttery, thick, rich beer and it’s delicious! No worries, all the alcohol cooks out of the bread so it’s safe for everyone to enjoy.
- Is there a substitute for beer? Yes if you don’t have any beer on hand, you can substitute with ginger ale.
- How do I store it? Place in an airtight container and store at room temperature for 2-3 days.
- Can I freeze it? Yes simple wrap in plastic cling wrap and then aluminum foil and place in a freezer resealable bag for up to 6 months. To thaw remove from freezer and let come to room temperature on the counter. We like to reheat the slices in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds.

I LOVE this recipe. But I do have a question. I’m helping a friend move and I wanted to have something baking as we unpack (baking bread as he’s moving into a new house just sounds lovely to me). Since his kitchen won’t be unpacked — I was going to get this mixed up at my home and bake it off at his home (he’s over an hour away). Is this possible or should I hold off on adding the butter on top until it’s going into the oven?
Julie Evink says
It would probably be best to hold off but I think it will work either way, but I’ve never tested it!
Jane says
I am making it right now! One plain, one with cheese and jalapenos. It looks and smells great. 20 more minutes! 🙂
Julie says
Sounds fantastic! I hope you enjoy!
Jane says
It was great! The top was firm and the right amount of crunchy (baked it for 60 minutes) and the inside was moist and delicious. We liked the cheese and jalapeno version slightly better. It pairs well with hearty soups and stews during the winter and also makes for a yummy anytime snack. Thanks for posting this recipe. It will be a staple in this home – so easy and simple to make. Julie, I hope you and your family have a Happy New Year!
Julie says
Thank you, Jane! I’m so glad you enjoyed this! Thanks for letting me know how they turned out!

You don’t say how much herbs to add
Julie says
You can add to your liking – start with 1/2 tbsp and go from there!

Julie,
Something went wrong when I
mixed the ingredients. It never
congealed. Should have gotten
sticky, mine was soup. Had new
Baking powder, could the flour have been old? Stirred it with a spoon.
Please advise.
Thank you, Lucy
Julie says
Hmmm, I’m not sure what happened. What happened when you tried baking it?

Hi, I’m hoping to make this today, and will use beer but please tell me which soda’s result in best flavor when I get ready to try your recipe with soda?
Thank you,
Dianne
Just signed up for your email list too..
Julie Evink says
We would recommend a ginger ale or root beer.
Beth says
This looks so soft and tender! Will I get the same results using soda instead of beer? Hope so!
Julie Evink says
You can sub ginger ale for beer and it will be almost as good!

Julie Evink says
This is true!
Sandy says
Hi Julie,
It’s me again Sandy. I wanted to give you a update on the beer bread that I made yesterday. The bread ? itself turned out perfect. I was disappointed though in the flavor. Is there some kind of seasoning I might add to the recipe to make it more flavorful?
I am going to give this recipe another try with some seasoning added to it. I was hoping you could give me some suggestions to that.
Thank you again Julie for the recipe.

Here is one that adds honey – https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/honey-beer-bread and another that adds garlic and cheddar – https://todayscreativelife.com/beer-bread/
Sandy says
Julie,
Would you have any other recipes for non-yeast bread? I love baked bread, but do not bake it myself because you need yeast in it. I do not have the patience for waiting for the bread to rise.
Julie Evink says
I have quick breads that are sweet but nothing that isn’t sweet!
