Ingredients for Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Legs
- Chicken legs – Skin on chicken legs have so much flavor! You can also use bone-in chicken thighs which are super juicy.
- BBQ sauce – Use your favorite store bought sauce or try making homemade barbecue sauce with pantry staples.
- Grape jelly – This is probably not something you already have, but once you try these chicken legs, you’ll always have grape jelly on hand! It adds a sweetness to the sauce and gives a really unique flavor.
- Ground black pepper – Enhances the flavor of the sauce and chicken.
How To Make Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Legs
- Whisk BBQ sauce, grapy jelly, garlic and black pepper in a small bowl.
- Place chicken legs in zip top bag and pour in half of the BBQ marinade to coat chicken. Remove air from bag and marinate for at least one hour up to overnight.
- Store remaining marinade in an airtight container in the fridge.
- Place chicken legs on prepared baking sheet and brush with reserved marinade.
- Place in preheated oven and bake 35-40 minutes or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 185-190 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Pro Tips
- Chicken is safe to eat at 165 degrees Fahrenheit, but I like to cook drumsticks to 185-190 degrees Fahrenheit to make sure there aren’t any red spots at the bone.
- Don’t skip marinating the chicken! This helps to keep the chicken legs super juicy.
Storage and Reheating
Fridge: Store leftover baked BBQ chicken drumsticks in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Freezer: You can freeze leftovers for another time. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer safe container. Thaw in the fridge overnight.
To reheat, bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes. You can also microwave leftover chicken legs in 30 second intervals until hot throughout.
Should I Cover The Chicken Legs While They Bake?
No, you should not cover the chicken while it is in the oven. Covering the chicken will steam it instead of roasting it and you won’t get a crisp skin.
Juicy BBQ drumsticks are going to be a hit at the dinner table tonight! Quick, easy and so flavorful, this dish is going to become a regularly requested one from the whole family.
