How to Make Crockpot Swedish Meatballs
Step by Step Photos above!
- Combine Gravy Mixture – combine both of the soups, broth, gravy mix and water in a bowl. (Photo 1)
- Cook in Slow Cooker – place the meatballs in the slow cooker. Pour the soup mixture over the top of the meatballs. Cook on low for six hours. (Photos 2 & 3)
Should I brown meatballs before putting in slow cooker?
Frozen meatballs have already been cooked before they are frozen, so there’s no reason to brown them before putting them in the slow cooker. If you make homemade meatballs it is a good idea to brown them first before placing them in the slow cooker or they tend to fall apart.
Why are Swedish meatballs called Swedish meatballs?
Swedish meatballs were long thought to have originated in Sweden, but turns out they might actually have been created in Turkey originally! It’s not really the meatballs that set the dish apart from other types of meatballs, but the sauce. Swedish meatballs are served in a rich and creamy gravy instead of tomato sauce like Italian meatballs. So, the meatballs on their own are just meatballs – add the gravy and then you can call them Swedish Meatballs!
How are Swedish meatballs different from regular meatballs?
There’s not much difference between Swedish meatballs and other types of meatballs although the seasonings may be different. Someone making Swedish meatballs from scratch may include spices like nutmeg and allspice and they don’t have any cheese, unlike Italian meatballs. Like a lot of things, every Swedish Meatball recipe will vary! For these Crock Pot Swedish Meatballs I use frozen meatballs because I like to keep it really simple! What makes them “Swedish” to me is the sauce! It’s rich and creamy and so delicious.
What is a good side dish with meatballs?
Crock Pot Swedish Meatballs is the kind of dinner that goes with all kinds of side dishes. Serve them with Easy Homemade Breadsticks to soak up all of that delicious sauce! Or, you can add some vegetables on the side like Roasted Cauliflowe. You could also switch out the noodles and serve the meatballs and sauce over Mashed Potatoes or rice to switch things up.
If you’ve been looking for a delicious and EASY crock pot recipe you have got to try these Swedish Meatballs! It’s one of my family’s favorite dinners and I think your family will love it, too!

Way too salty! Looked so yummy, but all low-sodium canned goods should be a must with this one!
Taylor says
can this be cooked on high in less time? if so, how much time on high?
Julie Evink says
If you thaw the meatballs out before cooking this I would think 2-3 hours on high!
Lynn Farrell says
Loved seeing this recipe!! It reminds me of my moms favorite recipe for Swedish meatballs. Only difference is she used cream of celery soup instead!! I use whatever cream of soup I have in the closet!’ Thanks for the memories!!’
Julie Evink says
Awwww love those memories!
Jennifer says
Made this tonight and it got rave reviews from a picky husband who generally does not like crockpot meals and two kids (and me too!!). Made enough to feed our family of 4 twice so we’ll freeze the gravy and left over meatballs. We served it over egg noodles but we’ll try mashed potatoes next time. Thanks so much!
Julie Evink says
So glad you enjoyed it Jennifer! Makes my night 🙂
Melanie says
i would like to know, do you put the meatballs in frozen OR can you make your own and would you put them in the slow cooker raw or cooked?
Julie Evink says
If you made your own I would put them in precooked. I usually just put them in frozen, precooked.
Maria Murphy says
Hi there. Can you tell me what golden mushroom soup is! Thanks!
Julie Evink says
It’s a type of soup and I usually get Campbells you’ll find it in the section with the cream of condensed soups!
Robin Liljenquist says
My husband is allergic to mushrooms, do you have any recommendations for substitutes for the soups? Thanks!
Sandy says
I fixed this for supper tonight and we really liked it. This was very easy to make. I served with mashed potatoes and green beans. I will be making this one again.
Julie Evink says
So glad you liked it Sandy!
Joe and Chrissi says
This was a fun recipe! Chrissi and I mixed it up from the your original directions to suit our needs. We used some ground Turkey already in the fridge and made some Turkey Meatballs. Using the directions, Chrissi and I found the sauce to be a little thick and would add a bit more broth to the mixture to thin the sauce down. Adding some Fresh Mushrooms would be fantastic too, though we didn’t add any to ours because we thought of that idea as we were devouring dinner!
ChiWei says
I hear ya on the “keeping it together” part! And these meatballs look yum!
Amber says
What do you serve with swedish meatballs? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question… Something tells me mashed potatoes? Please help! Meal planning tonight and looking to add this our menu 🙂
Julie Evink says
I serve the Swedish Meatballs over egg noodles and then I serve a veggie with it!
Heather says
Traditionally, Swedish meatballs are served with boiled potatoes, gravy, and lingonberry sauce. You can find the latter at Ikea, if your grocery store doesn’t carry it. And it’s yummy!
Marianne says
I’m a Swedish mum of two boys (6 & 2) and as Heather correctly described swedish meatballs are traditionally served with boiled potatoes, gravy and Lingonberrys. If you want to try and make them from scratch here’s my mother-in-law’s recipe (that she has used for over 45 years). Not a crocpot dish but will make a really special Sunday dinner (and the gravy is most often served on the side 😉 )
You will have to use Google to transform the amounts 😉
1 kg minced meat 50/50 beaf/pork
1 finely chopped yellow onion (saute’d in butter until soft, then set aside to cool)
1 whole egg
1 dl of breadcrumbs
~2 tablespoons of potatoflour
1 dl of milk
Salt & pepper
In a large bowl mix together breadcrumbs, milk and potatoflour and let it swell for approx. 10-15 min.
With your hands gently blend in the minced meat, egg and onion. Season with salt & pepper.
If the meatballdough is wery wet add up to 2 additional tablespoons of potatoflour.
Heat up a fryingpan with a good dollop of butter 😉 testfry one meatball to see if you got the seasoning right, then continue rolling meatballs with your hands and frying them on mediumheat until cooked 🙂
Serve with gravy, boiled potatoes and Lingonberrys…. Enjoy!

This recipe sounds great for my upcoming 30th birthday!!! Do you know how many your servings your recipe makes? Thanks 🙂
