Ingredients

  • 10 slices thick slices of bread
  • 4 eggs
  • ¾ c. whole milk
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Butter for griddle

Instructions

  • Preheat a non-stick griddle to 350 degrees F. You can also use a large non-stick skillet on medium low heat).
  • In a large shallow dish (I like to use a pie plate) whisk all the ingredients except the bread.
  • Butter griddle right before you add the bread.
  • Dip the bread slices, one at a time, into the egg mixture dredging them so they are coated on both sides. Place on hot, greased griddle or skillet.
  • Cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes, then flip over and cook the opposite side until golden brown, about 2 minutes longer.
  • Remove to a plate and keep warm or serve immediately with desired toppings.

THE BEST BREAD FOR FRENCH TOAST
The best bread to use is thick-sliced bread. Regular sandwich bread doesn’t work great because it’s too thin and not sturdy enough to stand up to the batter, which means it can end up soggy. So, definitely pick out a bread that is sturdy and either pre-sliced into thick pieces or that you can slice yourself. Here are some different kinds of bread that are great for this:
  • Brioche
  • Challah
  • Thick-sliced country white bread
  • French bread
  • Texas toast
It’s a great way to use up day-old bread, too!
HOW TO KEEP IT WARM
If you want to keep the slices warm while you cook the rest of the batch, transfer them to a sheet pan. I like to keep them in a warm oven (about 200 degrees F.) while I finish cooking the rest of the it. Then everything is nice and hot when you serve it!
TOPPING IDEAS
You can serve the French Toast with just some butter and warm maple syrup, but to make it a little more fun (and fancy!) you might like to try these ideas:
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top of each serving.
  • Add some fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or sliced bananas. Or a combination is great, too!
  • Homemade whipped cream is always a special treat.
  • Finely chopped walnuts, pecans or almonds add a little crunch!
