Mozzarella Sticks

Crispy bread crumb coated cheese sticks with melted cheese in the middle!

Ingredients

  • 16 oz string cheese
  • 2 c. Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying

For Serving

  • Ranch dressing
  • Marinara sauce
  • Parsley chopped for garnish optional

Instructions

  • In a shallow bowl or plate add breadcrumbs, garlic powder, Italian seasoning to shallow bowl or plate and mix with fork.
  • In another shallow bowl or plate add flour.
  • In a small bowl whisk together egg, salt, pepper and buttermilk, then add to a third shallow bowl or plate.
  • Dip cheese stick into egg mixture, then into flour, back into the egg mixture and then into the breadcrumbs. Press crumbs into cheese gently.
  • Place on a sheet pan and freeze for 20-30 minutes.
  • Add about 2 inches of oil to heavy skillet and heat to 350 degrees F.
  • Add to hot oil in batches and fry until golden on all sides, about 2 minutes or until golden brown, turning frequently.
  • Remove from oil and drain on a plate lined with a paper towel. Serve immediately with favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Use string cheese to make this recipe easy! No slicing or guessing required – they are perfectly sized.
  • Bread all of the sticks and then freeze them for a bit so they’re nice and cold. They will fry up perfectly!
  • Use a high smoke point cooking oil like vegetable oil or canola oil.
  • Monitor the temperature of the oil – 350°F is the perfect temperature for frying!
