- This super fun cookie is a great recipe for a holiday cookie exchange or party. They’re festive and cute and sure to get a smile out of everyone this Christmas season!
- You can make a dozen cookies in just about 30 minutes. This is a quick and easy recipe that you can squeeze in between all of your fun holiday activities.
- Grinch cookies are the easy button on Christmas cookies. No need to bake from scratch, just use store-bought sugar cookie mix and a little Christmas spirit to turn them in to a festive creation!
Ingredients for this Grinch Cookies Recipe
- Sugar cookie mix – Any store-bought mix will do, so just grab your favorite box of sugar cookie mix!
- Water – Water helps to bring this cookie dough mixture together and give it plenty of moisture.
- Butter – You can use either unsalted or salted butter in this grinch cookies recipe, both will work just fine!
- Egg – Allow the egg to come to room temperature before mixing it into the sugar cookie dough mixture.
- Green food coloring – Liquid food coloring seems to work best, but you can also use gel food coloring if you prefer.
- Sugar – I like to roll these cookies in sugar before baking to give them more sweetness but also a slightly crunchy outside coating.
- Heart sprinkles – Grab heart sprinkles on the baking aisle of your local grocery store, at your local hobby store, or online.
How to Make Grinch Cookies
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, then line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it to the side.
In a large bowl, combine the sugar cookie mix, softened butter, egg and water. Mix together until crumbly using a electric mixer or stand mixer.
Add 40 drops of green food dye and then mix the dye in well until the color is fully combined and you have a bright green color. Add additional food dye if needed. You can use your hands at this point to make the mixing process more easy.
Use a cookie scoop and create heaping scoops of sugar cookie dough. Gently roll dough balls sugar and then place them onto the previously prepared cookie sheet.
Do not press the cookies down at this step, keep them in a ball form.
Bake the cookies for 8-9 minutes, then remove them from the oven. Immediately add a candy heart to the top right section of each cookie.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 8-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely!
How to Store Grinch Cookies
Place grinch sugar cookies into an airtight container and store at room temperature for about a week.
You can also store these cookies in the freezer in an airtight container and they’ll last for a few months! When you’re ready to eat a tasty sugar cookie, thaw them in the container at room temperature.
What can I use if I can’t find heart sprinkles?
If you are unable to located heart sprinkle, then get a small tube of red gel icing and draw a heart onto each cookie after they have completely cooled! You could even use a red m&m in a pinch!
Can I make my own sugar cookie mix?
While using boxed sugar cookie mix makes this recipe go incredibly quickly, you can make your own mix if your prefer. My recipe for soft sugar cookies would work great here! Then just add green dye, roll in sugar like this recipe calls for and bake.
Pro Tips
- We recommend using a gel color for the food dye. It turns the dough a brighter green so you get the perfect green cookies.
- Are you or your kids sensitive to food dye? You can use alternative food dye from natural sources, or even color these cookies with a bit of matcha!
- Make a snowy look to your cookies by dusting these freshly baked cookies with powdered sugar.
- You can add red and green sprinkles to the top of your cookies, or even use frosting. Just make sure to get that heart sprinkle onto the top of each cookie!
Grinch cookies look like they stepped straight out of whoville! You’re going to love this super simple Christmas cookie recipe. Enjoy them while watching the Grinch movie!

- gel green food coloring
- 13 Heart sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

- Once crumbly, add about 40 drops of green food dye (or until the color green of your preference).
- Mix well until the color is fully combined and creates a soft dough. I used my hands to finish mixing the cookie dough to help it come together.
