How to Make Creamy Chicken Stroganoff
Sauté onion in butter over medium-high heat until translucent.
Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute or until fragrant.
Add chicken to the skillet and cook until browned.
Stir the flour, salt, ground black pepper and mushrooms into the chicken mixture. Simmer on low for five minutes.
Add Cream of Chicken soup to skillet and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in sour cream.
Serve chicken stroganoff with rice or noodles and garnish with parsley, if desired.
Storage and Reheating
Fridge: Store leftover chicken stroganoff in an airtight container up to 3 days. Store any rice or noodles in their own separate container.
Freezer: You can also freeze this dish to use for another time. Freeze in a disposable pan, wrapped in plastic wrap and tin foil. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking to reheat. The consistency of the cream sauce may change through freezing, however.
To reheat leftovers, use stovetop, stirring often or microwave until hot throughout.
Pro Tips
- Chicken is safe to eat when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a meat thermometer to help you monitor the chicken.
- Using full fat sour cream will give you a richer sauce than if you use a reduced fat version.
FAQs
It is possible too much flour was added to the pan. If you find yourself with a cream sauce that is too thick, or gummy, stir in water, a little at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. You may have to adjust your salt and pepper, to taste.
Since you will be adding it in at the end and off the heat, you will be safe from curdled sour cream.
This easy weeknight chicken stroganoff checks all the boxes: quick, comforting and super creamy. I know you’re going to love this rich, hearty dish!

How to Serve Chicken Stroganoff
I love to serve this creamy dish over a bed of rice or egg noodles for convenience, but when I have a little more time, chicken stroganoff is so good over top of Mashed Potatoes. If you are looking for a lower carb option, mashed cauliflower is a good stand in. Sheet pan Roasted Vegetables, Roasted Broccoli or Roasted Cauliflower are always a quick and easy side option when you would like to serve a few more greens.
