Did you know that you can make your own Pumpkin Pie Spice at home with only 5 common spices? It’s so quick to make and have on hand. Use it in all your fall baking like cookies, breads, pies and so much more!

I’ve been experimenting making my own spice blends for baking and cooking and I have my newest one for you today: Pumpkin Pie Spice!
If you’re like me and make all the pumpkin recipes every fall you will LOVE having your own pumpkin spice blend on hand. No more expensive containers of it from the store!
What is Pumpkin Pie Spice?
It’s a mixture of warm spices that are used to flavor pumpkin desserts like pie, bread, pancakes, cakes and french toast, just to name a few!
Pumpkin puree is actually very mild and when you have a piece of pumpkin bread it’s usually the spices that people associate with the “pumpkin” flavor. Leave out the spices and it’s just not the same.
There are variations but basically, it’s a combo of five different spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
Many recipes call specifically for pumpkin pie spice, so it’s really convenient to have on hand – instead of measuring out individual spices it’s all in one mix.
In the past, when I haven’t had it on hand, I just used a random mixture of some spices but having it in the right proportion makes a big difference. It has just the right balance and will make your baked goods taste amazing!
Another common baking spice mix is apple pie spice, which has similar ingredients but with different amounts. Pumpkin pie spice has more cinnamon and ginger. You know what, though? I’ve used them interchangeably because there are no rules!
How to Make It
Are you ready for this? It’s quick so don’t miss it…
Just combine all of the ground spices in a bowl and mix well to combine. Store the mix in an airtight container – that’s it!
Pro Tips
- If you’re feeling fancy feel free to grind whole spices to make this spice combination! You will need a spice grinder and it will take a little more time but it’s a fun project.
- Be sure to check the expiration date on the spices before you mix them. If they are old it’s better to use fresh ones otherwise, the mix won’t last as long. It’s also a good idea to label the container with the date you made the mix so it’s easy to tell how old it is.
- When you store any kind of spices air is the enemy! So, always keep it stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Stored properly it will last a few years.
- You can easily double or triple the recipe and divide it into cute containers for gifts.
How to Use It
Once you have your mix, you’ll want to use it! Of course, Pumpkin Pie is the obvious choice, but there are so many other ways to use it – here are some more ideas:
- A fresh batch of chocolate chip pumpkin muffins in the morning are the perfect way to start the day.
- Mix things up for the holidays and make this irresistible Pumpkin Lasagna Dessert. Dare I say you’ll love it more than pie?
- Got the munchies? Your favorite snack just got a makeover. You are going to love Pumpkin Chex Mix!
You will love this on hand for all of your fall baking! I hope you give it a try!
