Why You’ll Love these Red White and Blue Dessert Cups
- It will only take you about 10 minutes to make a batch of four dirt cups. Easy peasy!
- You only need four ingredients, some candy worms, and parfait cups to make this dirt cup recipe. Super affordable and won’t be taxing.
- This is an easy no-bake recipe that you can add to your menu so that you can keep your oven space free for all the other food you’re making!
Ingredients for 4th of July Dessert Cups
- Dessert cups – Purchase some disposable plastic cups at your local Walmart or party store. If you have glass parfait dishes, those would work great too.
- Crushed Oreo cookies – Use whatever method that is easiest for you and crush Oreo cookies into a crumbly texture to make an edible dirt.
- Cheesecake pudding – Use whatever flavor pudding you want, but cheescake pudding pairs perfectly with Oreo crumbles.
- Red and blue gel food dye – Gel food dye works best in pudding as opposed to liquid food dye. If liquid is all you have, you can still use it! Just know that you may need to add a few more drops to get the perfect shade of each color.
- Milk – Whole milk will taste the best and make your pudding extra creamy. You can use 2% if you prefer!
- Gummy worms – You can use other candy, but worms are great in a dirt pudding recipe since it looks like worms going through dirt! And keep the same patriotic theme by picking out the red and blue gummy worms.
- Flag topper – Those toothpick flags are the cutest little garnish for 4th of July dessert cups!
Helpful Tools
How to Make Red White and Blue Dirt Cups
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and whole milk until the mixture is thick and creamy.
Place 1 cup of pudding into a small bowl and 1 ½ cups of pudding into another separate bowl.
Add blue dye to the bowl with one cup and red dye to the other bowl of pudding. Then, stir until the food dye is thoroughly incorporated and the pudding reaches your desired color.
In the bottom of each disposable parfait cup, place one tablespoon of crushed Oreos.
Then, the next five layers will go:
- 2 tablespoons of blue pudding
- 1 tablespoon of Oreo dirt
- 3 tablespoons of white pudding
- 1 ½ tablespoons of Oreo crumble
- 4 tablespoons of red pudding
Smooth each layer out as you go, being careful not to mix them together. Finally, top the cup with a final layer of two tablespoons worth of Oreo dirt.
Garnish the cups with red and blue gummy worms, add a cute little toothpick flag, and serve whenever ready!
How to Store Leftover Red White and Blue Dirt Cups
Leftovers of this dirt cup recipe can be stored in the refrigerator. Remove the toothpick flags from each cup and cover them tightly with plastic wrap. Then place in the fridge and store for up to 4 days. Do not freeze these cups and keep them cold until you are ready to serve!
After four days, the layers will probably begin to meld together and the Oreo crumble will be quite mushy. The sooner you eat them, the better!
What should I use if I don’t have cups or parfait dishes?
Wide mouth mason jars are a perfect substitute for parfait cups. You can also use regular clear drinking glasses as well, just don’t fill them up all the way.
What else can I add to 4th of July dirt cups?
Candy like M&M’s, Reeses pieces, Robin eggs and other chocolate treats taste delicious in dirt cups. You could even make some fresh chocolate chip cookies and crumble them up to top your dirt cups. Use some marshmallows in the mixture for a fun squishy texture!
Can I modify this recipe for other holidays?
This is a great recipe to easily modify! Make your pudding red and green and you’ve got a super fun Christmas dirt cup! Or, create different shades of pink with your food dye, add sparkly sprinkles and pink M&M’s and you’ve got a princess party dirt cup. The possibilities are endless, so just get creative!
Pro Tips!
- Make sure you give plenty of time for your pudding to set. Liquidy pudding is no fun and it will mix with the “dirt” and create an Oreo mush of this dirt pudding recipe.
- Keep the dirt cups chilled until you plan to serve! If you are using glass dishes, you can even chill those before you put the layers and pudding and Oreo dirt into the cups.
- You can make each layer of pudding a different flavor and have three flavors that taste yummy together! Don’t be afraid to branch out and experiement.
Oreos and pudding, you just can’t go wrong with that! Unleash that little kid inside of you and make an easy dirt cup recipe for the 4th of July!

We were so sad that these didn’t taste as good as they look. They were very one-note and the layers of jello cheesecake fell short. Next time I try something like this, I’ll do the blue layer of the cheesecake, white layer as whipped cream and red layers as strawberries.

I’m sorry these didn’t work out for you! Your suggestions sound like good alternatives for next time!

I modified and made it in a big bowl and it still made the layers just like in the small one. However, I used vanilla pudding, which is yellow and color so it turned out to be green, light, yellow, and red it tasted great!

I’m glad it still turned out great!
