Dump Cakes vs Cobblers
One question I get a lot is “what’s the difference between a dump cake and a cobbler?” Well, a dump cake is pretty much what it sounds like — a cake where you dump all of the ingredients in a baking pan and then bake it.
I think they get confused with cobblers because the cake mix layer bakes up to look like a crust, but they are not the same thing. A cobbler is a dessert with a batter that is mixed together before being spread over the fruit. Sometimes they are made with a biscuit topping, too.
A dump cake, like the one I’m sharing today, is so easy you don’t have to mix anything. All you do is layer the ingredients in a baking dish and pop it in the oven! Most dump cake recipes are made with boxed cake mixes too.
Ingredients for Peach Dump Cake
- Cake mix – Grab a white or yellow cake mix for the best flavor combination. Any kind will do — you can even use gluten free cake mix!
- Cinnamon – Adding cinnamon to this easy peach dump cake recipe gives it that boost of warmth and flavor that makes it extra delicious.
- Peaches – I recommend using peach pie filling for the best results. You can also use canned peaches in their juice or heavy syrup! Use two 15.25-ounce cans in place of the filling.
- Butter – Salted and unsalted butter will both work! The butter melts into the cake mix and makes this dump cake extra tasty.

How to Make Peach Dump Cake
Spread the peaches into an even layer in your prepared baking dish and then sprinkle the cinnamon over the top.
Sprinkle the cake mix over the peaches in an even layer. Slice the butter into thin slabs and place them in an even layer on top of the cake mix.
Bake the cake for 50 to 60 minutes at 350°F.
When you pull the cake out of the oven the cake mix will have transformed into a golden brown, buttery sweet topping. Underneath the peaches will be bubbling hot and so delicious!
Allow to cool for a few minutes, then serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and enjoy!
How to Store Peach Dump Cake
FRIDGE: If you have leftovers they will keep in the refrigerator up to five days! FREEZER: You can also freeze your leftovers! Transfer to an airtight container, or wrap the whole baking dish tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store leftovers in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw before reheating!
You can reheat leftovers in the microwave or oven, whichever you prefer.
Is dump cake supposed to be mushy?
Yes, dump cake is supposed to be pretty gooey. However, it is important to make sure that you bake it long enough so that it’s not super soggy. But that gooey, somewhat mushy, texture is totally normal!
What happens if you stir a dump cake?
Don’t stir your dump cake! Once you layer all of the ingredients in the baking dish, just pop it into the oven. Leaving the layers undisturbed is key to making the gooey topping and warm, peach filling.
Pro Tips for Peach Dump Cake
- The cake will be fine if it’s left out at room temperature for several hours to even overnight. This is great for potlucks or other events where food tends to sit out. After a day it’s best to pop it in the fridge! You can serve the cake warm or at room temperature.
- Feel free to add some tasty mix-ins to your peach pie filling. Chopped walnuts or chopped pecans would be tasty. And even slivered almond would be good in the filling or cake mix layer.
- Make sure you cover every section with some butter. The melted butter is key to ensuring the cake mix doesn’t stay dry!

can you use fresh peached ?
Julie Evink says
Yes you can, make sure to peel and dice them. You may also need to add extra sweetener because they aren’t as sweet as canned.

Came out great but still had some raw cake mix on top when it was done in a couple spots. Did I not put enough butter?
Courtney says
You need to really spread out to the butter chunks!
Amy F says
I prefer mine to actually have spots of raw cake mix lol but if you want to avoid this and have little undone cake (its perfectly normal to have small spots of raw cake mix) use stick butter(any kind just make sure its real butter not margarine) and cut (1) entire stick of butter into small 1/4inch squares (sometimes it takes (2) sticks of butter to line the top) and line the top with rows one square after another until the top is covered. You only need one layer of butter…

Thank you for answering! So glad you enjoy this recipe.

Has anyone attempted to use: 1 can of Peach Pie filling, 1 can of Blueberry Pie Filling, Yellow Cake mix, cinnamon, and butter?
Connie Johnson says
I wonder if you could use a spice cake mix instead of the yellow cake mix?
Courtney says
That would be a good substitute! 😋

What kind of American crap is this recipe – “1 box yellow cake mix” – pointless website, pointless recipe, here for then adverts only. To be fair the website name made it clear definitely a LIE recipe.

Wow, tell me how you really feel about me using convenience foods to make an easy, approachable recipe for people. To bad you didn’t actually use your name or real email and hid behind your keyboard. Hope your day gets better!

OMG, That horrific comment was totally uncalled for. You should have told him exactly where he could put his opinion. The anonymous commenter has NO Class at all, why the person’s name is NO. Ignore those pathetic fools. I’m going to love this recipe. Thanks for sharing. **.

Unless you work 9 hours a day, commute 2 hours and want to make something yummy for your family on a weekday. When did you decide you would start gatekeeping dessert recipes? If you have the time to tear into strangers for sharing a recipe you must have all the time in the world to bake entirely from scratch. Bless your heart!

Courtney says
Thank you!

The whole point of a dump cake is convenience. It’s an old southern tradition and that’s exactly how it is supposed to be made. No one told you that you have to make it at all. Your rudeness will not change our traditions so what was your point in posting this comment.
