Light and fluffy French Toast is a quick and easy breakfast that the entire family will request again and again. Hearty bread dunked in an easy batter recipe and fried until it’s crispy and browned. Learn how to make this so you can enjoy it for whenever you are craving it without going to a restaurant!
French Toast is one of my family’s favorite weekend breakfasts and I’ve been making it the same way for years! Golden brown slices of bread with just enough batter so they have a light crust on the outside and are soft and rich on the inside.
Have you ever made soggy French toast? Super sad, right? Trust me, I’ve been there so if it’s been a while since you’ve made this for breakfast you are going to want to give this easy recipe a try. It works and you’ll get beautiful slices that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Your family will think they’re in a restaurant! Add some oven bacon and scrambled eggs on the side for a hearty breakfast everyone will love.
The Best Bread for French Toast
The best bread to use is thick-sliced bread. Regular sandwich bread doesn’t work great because it’s too thin and not sturdy enough to stand up to the batter, which means it can end up soggy. So, definitely pick out a bread that is sturdy and either pre-sliced into thick pieces or that you can slice yourself. Here are some different kinds of bread that are great for this:
- Brioche
- Challah
- Thick-sliced country white bread
- French bread
- Texas toast
It’s a great way to use up day-old bread, too!
How to Make the Batter
What makes French Toast so decadent and amazing is the batter (or custard) that the bread slices are dipped in. A basic batter is made with just eggs and milk, but I like to dress it up with a few more ingredients to give it a great flavor.
- You will need a shallow dish. I like to use a pie plate.
- Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon together in the dish until smooth.
The cinnamon and vanilla are such a great combination – it will give it the most amazing flavor! You can also add a little nutmeg, cloves or even all-spice if you want to switch things up.
Batter and Cook
Once you have the batter ready, go ahead and heat up your non-stick skillet or griddle. You will want to add the butter right before you cook the French Toast.
- Dip the bread slices in the batter, coating them on both sides. Don’t let them sit in the mixture too long – you want them to be fully coated, but not sopping wet.
- Place each slice on the hot pan with the melted butter.
- Cook the bread for about two minutes on each side or until a golden-brown crust forms.
How to Keep it Warm
If you want to keep the slices warm while you cook the rest of the batch, transfer them to a sheet pan. I like to keep them in a warm oven (about 200 degrees F.) while I finish cooking the rest of the it. Then everything is nice and hot when you serve it!
Topping Ideas
You can serve the French Toast with just some butter and warm maple syrup, but to make it a little more fun (and fancy!) you might like to try these ideas:
- Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top of each serving.
- Add some fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or sliced bananas. Or a combination is great, too!
- Homemade whipped cream is always a special treat.
- Finely chopped walnuts, pecans or almonds add a little crunch!
What to Serve with French Toast
I love to serve a savory side dish or main dish to go along with sweet French toast.
- My crockpot breakfast casserole has ham, cheese, and eggs and you can prep it the night before and it’s ready for you in the morning.
- Sometimes I make fresh orange smoothies – the kiddos love them!
- Oven scrambled eggs are a quick and easy way to make eggs for a crowd!
You can go as simple or fancy as you want – either way, this is always a hit! Give it a try this weekend and you’ll see – everyone will love it!

Do you have to use whole milk for the recipe to turn out right or can i use whatever milk i have in my fridge?
Michelle Sperr says
Hi Shannon! I always use whole milk but you can certainly substitute for what milk you have on hand. You may find the consistency is a little different with the change in ingredients. Good luck!
