Irish Coffee is a quick and easy hot cocktail recipe that is perfect for the fall and winter months when you want to warm up. It only needs four basic ingredients, including coffee, brown sugar, Irish Whiskey and whipped cream, and everyone will love them! It’s perfect for enjoying after dinner. If you need a cocktail for your next dinner party this is the perfect one for you!

Is there anything more cozy on a cold night than a warm drink? When we have friends over for dinner during the fall and winter it’s so fun to make some spiked hot drinks like an Irish Coffee. For the kiddos, we make a batch of Hot Chocolate and the adults get their own special treat: sweetened coffee spiked with Irish whiskey and topped with whipped cream.
It’s always nice to have some coffee to serve after dinner, but instead of just plain coffee with some cream and sugar on the side, it’s so fun to make some cocktails like this. It’s like next-level coffee that’s a little fancier and, of course, spiked with a hit of whiskey. Serve the coffee drinks up with some cookies for a cold-weather dinner party dessert that everyone will love!
They might look complicated, but this drink is actually pretty easy to make and they always get rave reviews when we make them. They’re delicious, but I love the way they look, too!
Why this recipe works!
- The best part is you don’t need a fancy coffee maker to serve up some fancy Irish Coffee drinks!
- All you need is a few simple ingredients, although if you don’t have some cute glass coffee mugs it might be worth getting a set. You can, of course, use regular coffee mugs but the clear ones just look so great!
- The perfect after dinner drink to warm up with and relax with. Great for entertaining!
What is an Irish Coffee?
It is a hot drink made with coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar and whipped cream. After you combine the coffee, sugar and whiskey add the whipped so it sits on top. Instead of stirring the cream into the coffee you drink the spiked coffee through the cream. The hot coffee and whiskey with the cold and creamy whipped cream is a great combination!

Ingredients
This is a brief overview of the recipe so continue scrolling down to the recipe box for the full recipe!
- Strong brewed coffee
- Brown sugar
- Irish whiskey – Adjust the amount of whiskey depending on your guests’ tastes.
- Whipped cream – Homemade is always the best in my opinion but you could also by the canned version.
- Cinnamon, for garnish
Steps to Prepare
Make Coffee – Put the brown sugar in the bottom of the mug and pour the hot coffee
over the top. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Add Whiskey – Pour the whiskey into the coffee and stir
Top the Coffee – Spoon the whipped cream on top of the coffee and sprinkle cinnamon over the top to garnish.
Should I serve Irish Coffee in a Mug or Glass?
Part of the appeal of this drink is serving it in a glass mug so you can see the coffee and whipped cream layers. You can serve yours in a glass, but you need to make sure it’s heatproof. Pouring hot coffee into a regular glass could shatter it, so you can’t just use any old glass in your cabinet. You can, of course, use a regula
r (non-glass) coffee mug to serve it, too.
How do I make Whipped Cream?
For the whipped cream, you want to whip the cream just long enough for it to thicken. You don’t want it too thick otherwise it will be to thick to pour over the coffee and it might sink into the coffee instead of floating on top. You don’t need to add anything to the cream, just whip it until it thickens to the point where you can still pour it.
Variation Ideas
A traditional Irish Coffee is made with Irish whiskey, but you can also use Baileys which is an Irish whiskey and cream liqueur.

Cold and chilly nights, this warm cocktail, and good friends to share them with – What could be better? I know you’re going to love these coffee drinks!
