Ingredients for Chicken Cobbler
- Chicken – Shred leftover chicken or make shredded chicken in the Instant Pot or Crock Pot.
- Butter – I recommend using unsalted butter since the cream of chicken soup provides plenty of saltiness to the dish.
- Chicken broth – This helps make a gravy consistency for the creamy mixture you will pour over the chicken and veggies.
- Peas and carrots – Grab a bag of frozen peas and carrots to use in this dish.
- Onion powder – A little bit of onion powder adds lots of flavor to the creamy gravy you’ll add to the filling.
- Garlic powder – Use some garlic powder to create even more depth of flavor.
- Pepper – Just black pepper, no salt. There’s plenty of sodium from the cream of chicken soup and chicken broth.
- Milk – For the most creamy results, use whole milk. But you can also use whatever you have on hand!
- Cream of chicken soup – If you need to reduce the sodium in this recipe, use low sodium cream of chicken soup.
- Biscuit mix – The mix for red lobster cheddar bay biscuits is the secret ingredient to the most incredible chicken casserole.
- Cheddar cheese – You’ll need some shredded cheddar cheese for the biscuit mix.

How to Make Chicken Cobbler
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then pour melted butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish. You may need to tilt the baking dish around to get it to spread out.
Sprinkle the shredded chicken evenly on top of the melted butter, and do not stir. Then evenly sprinkle the frozen vegetables on top of the chicken layer.
In a separate bowl, add cream of chicken soup, chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper. Whisk until well combined.
Pour this mixture over the chicken and mixed vegetables layers, but don’t stir together.
In another mixing bowl add the biscuit mix, seasoning packet that came with biscuit mix, milk and shredded cheese and stir until combined well.
Pour this biscuit mix layer as evenly as possible on top of the other layers in the baking dish.
Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, uncovered, for about 50-60 minutes until bubbly and top is golden brown.
Allow the cobbler to rest for at least 10-15 minutes to thicken up. If you dig into it too soon after removing from the oven, it will be runny. Serve and enjoy!
How to Store Chicken Cobbler
Transfer leftover casserole to an airtight container or tightly wrap the casserole dish in plastic wrap. Store in the fridge for 3-4 days. For best results, only freeze unbaked casserole.
Can I make chicken cobbler ahead of time?
Absolutely! This is a fantastic meal to make ahead of time and freeze. Mix up the dish, following the instructions step by step, but don’t bake it. Then wrap your baking dish in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and freeze for 2-3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before baking! You may need to add a few extra minutes to the bake time since it will be cold.
Can I use a different biscuit mix in this recipe?
While I highly recommend using red lobster cheddar bay biscuit mix, you can use a different kind of mix if you prefer. Buttermilk biscuit mix would be tasty with this recipe! Even red lobster’s honey butter biscuit mix would work.
What to Serve with Chicken Cobbler
Serve this easy chicken cobbler casserole all on its own or with some cozy side dishes. Olive garden breadsticks and cheesy garlic bread are so yummy. Want more veggies? Make some air fryer broccoli or bacon wrapped green beans.
Don’t forget dessert! These chocolate caramel brownies are divine, or make easy apple crisp for a super cozy fall treat.
Pro Tips for the Best Chicken Cobbler Casserole
- Don’t mix any of the layers together! Just evenly pour one on top of the other and it’s good to go.
- If you don’t have any leftover chicken or time to make shredded chicken, you can shred a rotisserie chicken and use that.
- It is really important to let the cobbler rest before serving. Don’t skip this step or you’ll have a pretty swimmy serving on your plate!
