Why You’ll Love these Energy Balls
- These are a fabulous make-ahead recipe! Store them in freezer for a really long time and they are just as good as the first day they are made.
- Easily adapt these energy balls to make different flavors or fit dietary restrictions.
- This is a no-bake recipe that doesn’t require much clean-up. Kid-friendly and so easy that they can make them on their own!
Ingredients For Energy Balls
- Peanut butter – It is best to use smooth and creamy peanut butter in this recipe, not a crunchy one. You can use natural peanut butter if you want, just make sure that the butter and oil are thoroughly mixed together before using.
- Old fashioned oats – Oats will help keep the no bake energy balls from falling apart. If you want to ensure this recipe is gluten free, make sure that you get gluten-free old fashioned oats.
- Salt – A little pinch of salt helps to balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients.
- Mini chocolate chips – Use any flavor of chocolate chips: milk chocolate, semi-sweet, dark chocolate — they will all be tasty!
- Honey – Honey not only helps sweeten these peanut butter oat energy balls, but it also helps to bind the ingredients together.
- Protein powder – I used vanilla protein powder in this recipe, but you can use chocolate, peanut butter, caramel, and any other flavor that sounds good.
How to Make No Bake Energy Balls
- Add all ingredients to a medium mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with a silicone spatula or mixing spoon.
- Using a cookie scoop or spoon, scoop the mixture into balls and roll into evenly sized balls, about 1 inch in size. Place each of the peanut butter energy balls onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet.
- Place the cookie sheet into the fridge for an hour, or until the energy balls have hardened. Then transfer the balls to a freezer zip top bag and store in the freezer.
How to Store Energy Bites
FREEZER: For longer storage, keep energy bites in the freezer in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
FRIDGE: You can also store them in the fridge and they will last for up to 2 weeks.
What can I add to no bake energy bites?
You can add multiple different add-ins to make these energy bites a little different. Chia seeds and ground flaxseed are a wonderful way to add extra protein and they have many other nutritional benefits.
Dried fruit, shredded coconut, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and cocoa powder would all be yummy too.
If you have a peanut allergy, then swap the peanut butter for a different nut butter! Almond butter, cashew butter and sunflower seed butter would all be great. Any of your favorite nut butters are perfect.
Are energy balls good for you?
Energy bites can actually be pretty healthy! Depending on the ingredients you use, they can be sugary and unhealthy, but if you are careful with what you use then they can be a great snack.
Grab some peanut butter that is sweetened without sugar, and chocolate chips that are sugar free too. Then, sweeten the peanut butter energy balls with something with honey and maple syrup and there’s no refined sugar.
But these are full of healthy fats and protein, so they really are a better snack option. Of course, as with everything, eat them in moderation. But they are a much healthier alternative to many other sugary snack options.
Pro Tips for The Best No Bake Energy Balls
- Make sure to roll these into even-sized balls that are not too large. If they are too big, then they won’t set in the middle.
- Don’t overload the mixture too much or the balls won’t roll well and stick together.
- If the mixture is too dry, add peanut butter and honey. If it’s too wet, add a bit more rolled oats!
These delicious energy balls will quickly become one of your favorite new recipes!
