I just got done hosting my daughter’s second birthday party and I’m exhausted. Literally drained. It was only our family but my feet hurt, my hip hurts and I’m worn out. I quit possibly took on a little bit to much this weekend. I felt the need to make homemade cupcakes instead of ordering them. I felt the need to make several banners to announce that she was turning 2 and it had to be in the Minnie Mouse decor that I had picked for her theme. I had to clean my house. I had to make scotcheroo bars cut out in the shape of mouse heads and dipped in Candiquik.

But really….did I have too?

Who said I had to other than me? My friend I were talking the other week, my friend Danielle from Krafted Koch. She’s the one that helped me come up will all the decor and she designed the cupcake toppers because well she rocks my socks off and let’s just say I only act like I’m crafty. ACT people. It’s all a farce. She on the other hand amazes me and is totally authentically crafty.

    I guess I am from a very different generation, but I feel like almost everything social is overdone. Weddings now have a budget that would make a huge down payment on a house, Christmas is an extravaganza, birthdays and showers are no longer a friendly little get together. I don’t know where the need to impress and be “best” comes from. When my kids were little we might have had the grandparents or aunts and uncles over for cake and ice cream. The day was special even if we did not. Each child had small gifts and they got to choose their birthday dinner menu and of course the cake. They are all grown now and I do not think they ever felt deprived.I wish everyone would, especially in this difficult economy, would return to more simple times. The joy of the birthday or other occasions is in making the celebrant feel loved and special. I don’t think in years to come, a two year old will remember the food, gifts, or games, but they will know they were loved and cherished and time is the most precious gift you can offer a child (or anyone else) when you think about it.I might get a lavish Mother’s day gift, but what I really would love more would be a day with my children.

    First of all, these ribs look amazing! Second of all, go with store bought cupcakes! haha By the time most people get to the dessert at a party, they are so gorged, that they just shove it down without much notice anyways! ;)

    We have never had alot of family near and just last year our only family (my parents) moved to MI. For our kid’s BD they get to pick what they want to eat for dinner. When my parents were here they came to this dinner. So we didn’t always have it on their BD just near it, especially if it is during the school year. Until 10 they get to pick a cake from books that I have had since my kids were little and then I will do my best to decorate it. After 10 they get to pick ANY dessert or regular cake and I will make it. We might give a gift or 2, but really simple. They get plenty of gifts from both sets of grandparents we think. Also when they turn 10 they get a BD party with friends – this too when it works for Mom. When my son turned 10 he wanted a party with water – so we had to wait until it was warmer since his BD is in January. Just make your child feel extra special on their actual BD. We put up a banner in the house on the wall. Maybe they get an extra special snack in their lunch or they can pick breakfast too. Just depends on the time of year and what day their BD ends up on. So anyway this is the way we do it. My children are almost 14, 12, almost 10 and 7. Enjoy your children – each day. They grow up WAY to fast.

    I only go crazy when it comes to food. It’s just our close family but I love for everyone to walk away full. And of course it’s all about dessert!! Ribs really the perfect party food. Everyone loves them! These look finger licking good!

    Ribs looks awesome and I have a recipe question…says 1 lb of ribs…and I’m thinking I might need a bit more than that to satisfy my hubby ;) How much meat will this sauce cover? Thanks

    I don’t go all out for parties anymore, but I do find that having something special makes the occasion memorable. And I think it turns people’s attention away from the mess I’ve left in my wake…hopefully.

    These ribs certainly look worth throwing a party for! I’m the only one in my family who likes them, so friends could come over and enjoy them with me while everyone else eats burgers!

    I always take on way too much when it comes to my kids parties…nothing near as extravagant as some of the stuff on Pinterest, but I still tend to go overboard on the food and cake. These ribs look mouth-watering!

    I’m not sure why we do these things to ourselves! I once decided to throw a pirate themed party for my son’s 3rd. With the idea that I would make a pirate ship-shaped cake. As if he would even remember it! Oh boy.

    We stopped doing birthday parties at 10 in favor of having a friend over to have a sleepover. The next party they get is at 16 and it won’t be a big party.
