Ingredients For A Classic Margarita
- Tequila – Use your favorite brand of tequila. I also recommend trying a couple of different brands to learn what type of tequila you enjoy the most. Typically, a blanco tequila is used for margaritas, this is also called ‘silver’ tequila.
- Sweet and sour mix – This simple homemade mix adds the perfect citrus flavor from fresh lemons and limes and some sweetness.
- Triple sec – This is an orange liqueur that adds zest and sweetness to beverages. You can also substitute Grand Marnier or Cointreau in it’s place if you’ve got one at home already.
- Garnish – Coarse salt for the glass rims and lime wedges. The salt intensifies the flavors, don’t skip this step!
How To Make A Margarita
- Place tequila, sweet and sour mix and triple sec in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Secure the lid and shake to combine all the ingredients until chilled.
- Run a lime wedge around the edge of a glass, dip the glass rim in coarse salt and fill glass with ice. Strain the drink into the glass, garnish with lime and serve.
How To Make A Batch of Margaritas
- Combine tequila, sweet and sour mix and triple sec in a pitcher.
- Rim glasses with lime and salt.
- Pour over ice in glass to serve.
Storage
Batched margaritas will keep for 7 to 10 days in the refrigerator. Just be sure to store them in a sealed container. Store without ice and limes, just add them when you’re ready to serve.
Pro Tips
- Have you ever heard of a dirty margarita? If you like a salty twist on this beverage, add olive brine to the cocktail shaker and garnish with an olive.
- If you want to make a slushy margarita, add tequila, sweet and sour mix, triple sec and ice to a blender. Blend until you reach your desired consistency.
Can I Make Margaritas Ahead of Time?
Yes! You can make these ahead of time, which makes it so easy for entertaining. All you need to do is mix all of the ingredients together and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
Can I Make Margaritas Without A Shaker?
If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can also use a jar with a lid to shake the ingredients. Or just combine the ingredients in the serving glass and stir them.
Got your cocktail shakers ready? I hope so because you are going to love these Margaritas! Fresh, tart and so refreshing you will sip on these all summer long.

How To Serve Margaritas
Margaritas are a classic beverage to enjoy with your favorite tortilla chips and dips like Homemade Salsa, household favorite Guacamole or classic Pico de Gallo.
Of course, margaritas are always enjoyed alongside tacos! Baked Tacos are always great for a quick weeknight meal and we love to prepare Crock Pot Chicken Tacos when we have a full schedule. When we are feeling a little more adventurous, we love making Shrimp Tacos. They are loaded with fresh toppings and a cilantro lime dressing!
