Easy homemade salsa recipe just like you get in the restaurants! It’s smooth and comes together in just a few minutes. Grab the chips and dig in. You’ll think you are in your favorite Mexican restaurant when you make this recipe!
Salsa is one of those things I’ve always wanted to make, but have never had enough guts or ambition. I’ve made so many dips like Texas Caviar, 7-Layer Dip, and Cheesy Corn Dip so I can’t believe I waited this long to make my own homemade salsa! It’s so easy!
I’m so glad I finally took a leap! Sure, some of the ingredients do come from cans and I hope to graduate to a garden this summer and pico de gallo from that, but in the meantime, I’m quite satisfied with this little recipe. It’s smooth just like a restaurant’s salsa.
Even though it’s made with canned ingredients it tastes a whole lot fresher than jarred salsa. Fresh lime juice is the secret ingredient!

Homemade Salsa FAQs
This recipe is super simple and straightforward, but here are a few of the more frequently asked questions.
If you have a question that isn’t answered please leave us a comment below and we will do our best to answer it!
Can I make it spicier?
You can add more jalapeno peppers or you can add your favorite hot sauce, too. Or, if you don’t have hot sauce on hand you can always add some crushed red pepper flakes to add more spiciness. If you up the spicy factor of your salsa you may want to add a bit more lime juice because the acidity helps balance out the flavors!
Can I use fresh ingredients?
Yes you can substitute tomatoes for the canned tomatoes, we recommend a Roma tomato. You can also use fresh jalapenos. Remove the seeds in membrane for a mild taste or leave them in if you like it spicier.
How long does it last?
It will keep up to a week in the refrigerator as long as it’s stored in an airtight container.
How do I store it?
Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it or if you have any leftovers.
What I love about this homemade salsa recipe is that I can make a batch ahead of time, which is so great for entertaining. It also gives time for the flavors in the salsa to meld together.
What is the difference between salsa and pico de gallo?
Pico de gallo is a type of salsa that is made with all fresh ingredients including tomatoes, onions, chilis, cilantro and lime juice. The ingredients are chopped so that the pico de gallo has a chunky texture. There are many variations of salsa and this restaurant version I’m sharing is made with pantry ingredients and has a smoother texture than pice de gallo.
