The BEST Homemade Salsa
Salsa is one of those things I’ve always wanted to make, but have never had enough guts or ambition. I’ve made so many dips like Texas Caviar, 7-Layer Dip, and Cheesy Corn Dip so I can’t believe I waited this long to make my own homemade salsa! It’s so easy!
I’m so glad I finally took a leap! Sure, some of the ingredients do come from cans and I hope to graduate to a garden this summer and pico de gallo from that, but in the meantime, I’m quite satisfied with this little recipe. Plus homemade salsa all year long? What a great thing!
I love making this salsa for Taco Tuesdays and Cinco de Mayo and it’s great for entertaining, too! You can easily double the recipe to serve more people. Just be sure to buy lots of tortilla chips!

I’m always a sucker for the chips and salsa when we go out for Mexican food and this homemade version is just as tempting, but you don’t have to go out to get your chips and salsa fix! I wanted to make salsa like the one served at our favorite Mexican restaurant and, guys, I think I nailed it! It’s smooth, flavorful and so addictive.
I’ve never met a salsa I didn’t like, but I have to admit I love a salsa that that is smooth and not so chunky. It’s what I love about restaurant salsa. I never thought I could replicate it at home, but then I figured out I could use a mix of pantry ingredients and a couple of fresh ingredients to make my own homemade salsa.
The first time I made it my family thought I got take out from our favorite Mexican restaurant! I’m telling you this salsa is so, so good and much better than store-bought salsa and cheaper, too!
Even though this homemade salsa recipe is made with canned ingredients it tastes a whole lot fresher than jarred salsa. Fresh lime juice is the secret ingredient! It adds a pop of brightness and freshness that reminds me of my favorite restaurant salsa.

You can add more jalapeno peppers or you can add your favorite hot sauce, too. Or, if you don’t have hot sauce on hand you can always add some crushed red pepper flakes to add more spiciness. If you up the spicy factor of your salsa you may want to add a bit more lime juice because the acidity helps balance out the flavors!

Homemade salsa will keep up to a week in the refrigerator as long as it’s stored in an airtight container, although I don’t usually have any leftovers to keep. We usually eat it all in one sitting it’s so good!

Homemade Salsa Recipe
- 28 oz whole tomatoes drained
- 4 oz diced jalapenos (canned)
- 1/4 c. yellow onion quartered
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp lime juice
- Place all ingredients together into a food processor or blender and puree until smooth.
- Serve with tortilla chips.
