This classic patty melt recipe is just like the delicious meal you can order off the menu at a diner! If you’re craving something cheesy and warm, then this patty melt will satisfy that craving for sure. I love to make these when I need an easy dinner. The entire family eats them up with no complaints — they love a good patty melt!
Since you can make 4 sandwiches in just a half hour, it’s a great weeknight meal. Throw in some air fryer french fries and your meal is complete. Ok, maybe not complete until you’ve had a milkshake or chocolate chip cookies, but you get the point. This is a crave-able recipe that will have you coming back for me, so it’s a good thing it’s so simple to make a classic patty melt!
Why You’ll Love this Patty Melt Recipe
- The clean-up is minimal when you make patty melts! Just clean the skillet you cooked in and the plate you ate off of. It’s that quick and simple!
- One of the best things about recipes like these is that you can double or triple it to make more than enough sandwiches. If you are serving a lot of people, just make as many as you need.
- Easily adapt and change the flavors however you would like. You can use different cheeses, different condiments, and even add things to the sandwich.
Ingredients for a Patty Melt
- Ground beef – I recommend using a more lean ground beef so that the patty melts aren’t too greasy.
- Beef seasoning – You can make your own beef seasoning, use your favorite store-bought kind, or grab our beef seasoning over at Gimme Some Grillin’!
- White onion – The flavor of white onion pairs best with these patty melts, but you could also use yellow onion.
- Rye bread – I have found that the key to a good patty melt is rye bread. It’s extra sturdy, so it holds up well to the mayo, melty cheese, and butter.
- Mayonnaise – Spread some mayo on the bread for extra flavor and a creamy addition to this delicious patty melt.
- Swiss cheese – Feel free to change up the cheese you use! But swiss cheese really does make a big difference.
- Butter – You can use salted or unsalted butter, both will work.

How to Make a Patty Melt
Start by seasoning the ground beef with the beef seasoning and mixing it in well. Then divide the mixture into 4 balls and form them into patties.
Spread 1 tablespoon of mayo onto one side of each piece of bread. Then use 1 tablespoon of butter on the other side of the bread.
Preheat a skillet or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and melt butter in it. Once melted, add the sliced onions to the pan. Sauté onions for 10-15 minutes until they caramelize, then remove them from the skillet and put on a plate.
Place the hamburger patty in the same skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, then flip and cook until browned and crispy.
Remove the cooked burger patties from the skillet and assemble the sandwiches. Place the beef patty on the mayo side of the bread, top with two slices of Swiss cheese, and then add grilled onions. Place the second slice of bread on top.
Then, put the patty melt into the skillet over medium-low heat and cook until the bread is golden brown.
Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately!
How to Store Leftover Patty Melt
Place any leftovers into an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just keep in mind that the longer you store this sandwich, the soggier the bread will become. When you’re ready to eat your leftovers, reheat it in a hot skillet to crisp the bread back up!
What to Serve with a Patty Melt
Whatever you like to serve with burgers, you can serve with patty melts! Tater tots and french fries are my favorites, and potato wedges are tasty too. Patty melts also go great with cold sides like broccoli salad and pesto pasta salad.
You can keep clean-up minimal and make things like air fryer potatoes or air fryer zucchini fries. And if you want something extra special, air fryer fried pickles are to die for! Or, you can go to a healthy option like air fryer asparagus.
What can I add to a patty melt?
While a classic patty melt just contains meat, cheese, mayo and onions, you can always make it your own and add more things! Bacon is never a bad idea when it comes to this classic sandwich. Some dijon mustard or ketchup would be a delicious condiment addition too.
If you want to add some kick, sliced jalapeños would be good. And you can add some bite with sour dill pickle slices too! Really, feel free to customize it however you want.
What bread can I use in place of rye bread?
Whatever you choose, you’ll want a thick and hearty bread to use on this sandwich. Sliced sourdough would be delicious, and thick Texas toast could work too. The more substantial and sturdy the bread, the better!
Pro Tips for the Best Patty Melt Recipe
- Season the beef well! If you do not have beef seasoning, I’d recommend investing in something good so that your burgers are seasoned well every time.
- Don’t overcook the beef patty. Nothing is more sad than biting into a burger that has dry and crumbly beef in the middle.
- Make sure that you don’t slice the bread too thick. You’ll want a good ratio of bread, to cheese, to meat!
Now you can make your classic diner favorite in the comfort of your own home!
