Pickle Roll Ups
These ham, cream cheese, and pickle roll ups are a staple at all our parties! They sound a bit odd don’t they? Well, it goes like this, “Don’t knock it until you try it!” They are delicious and so very easy. I’m pretty sure my husband and kids could whip them up. They only have three ingredients, as you can guess by the name, and take about 15 minutes to make. They can be made ahead of time so you can be ready for your parties!
Are you a fan of sweet and salty? I know I am and I’m pretty sure that’s exactly why these are my favorite appetizer ever. Apparently you can make these into a dip too if you are really not feeling the whole wrap and cut process. But you still have to chop things so I’m not sure it will be much faster!
A few of my other favorite bite size appetizers that are super simple are Kicking Bacon Wrapped Chicken Bites, Pressure cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs, BBQ Bacon Wrapped Chicken Bites and Cheesy Turkey Bacon Ranch Pinwheels.
Ham Pickle Roll Ups
I’m guessing this combo is Midwestern by I’m not positive about that. If you are not from the midwest my question is, have you heard of the delectable combo that makes up these Pickle Roll Ups before?
As I’ve said they are a staple around here and one of my favorite combos, but I’ve learned that it’s not always normal to have combos like this.
For instance about a month ago I took a trip to Austin, Texas for a blog conference. It was marvelous there because first of all it was WARM. It’s the middle of April here in Minnesota and we just had a snow storm yesterday. As you can imagine, I’m all about warmth right now!
Anyways back to my trip to Austin. After arrival I headed out to get some cocktails with my friends. I’m kind of a beer girl, sounds redneck but whatevs.
I ordered myself a beer on tap, something super original like a Bud Light I’m sure and asked for green olives in it. The waiter promptly looked at me like I had horns coming out of my head and then raised and eyebrow and repeated, “Olives?”
Yes, my friend olives. There’s something about that salty flavor with the beer. It’s awesome. I kept ordering this over the weekend and the looks from the bartenders were the same each time.
If you are looking at this recipe for Pickle Roll Ups like that, don’t, not until you try it!
You know what else is super awesome? Dill Pickle Dip and Fried Pickles! Mmmmmm, those are a must have in my book too!
How to Make Ham, Cream Cheese and Pickle Roll Ups!
First of all it’s so EASY!
Grab a slice of ham, slather some cream cheese on there and then lay your pickle in the middle of the ham slice.
Roll it up and then slice it up evenly.
Store them in a airtight container in the refrigerator.
My favorite part is eating the ends that aren’t pretty enough to put on your serving platter!
A few twists on pickle roll ups is using corned beef instead of ham slices or you can use whipped cream cheese instead of cream cheese blocks. It just spreads a little bit easier!
If you are looking for an easy appetizer for a party these are just what you are looking for. Not only are they delicious in the summer during the hot months but they are just as good at all your holiday parties during the winter too.
Plus, they travel great and you can make them the day before hand. I’m always looking for more recipes like that!

What’s the best ham to use and thick of a slice?

I first had these at a holiday party in upstate New York about 25 years ago. So delicious!! I like to snack on these, especially when I want a lower-carb snack. Planning on bringing them to a game night at a friend’s house next weekend.

My mother-in law made these one day when we were there for dinner in 1969. Never saw them before, and thought they were a little strange, but tried one anyway. Been hooked ever since. Make them every time we have a get together, and everyone loves them! I always use dill pickles. Pick a jar that has the biggest ones if you can. I get regular rectangle shaped boiled ham at the deli, not sliced too thin. Philly cream cheese, let soften at room temp. Line up pickles on paper towel, pat dry ham and pickles, spread cheese on ham, place pickle at one end with a little room to spare, and roll it up. Refrigerate for an hour for best results when time to slice. About 1/4″ thickness. And that’s it! SO easy! Enjoy! 🙂

They are an old classic staple! Great tips!

Of course I’ve made it! I grew up eating these! These were my mother’s go to appetizer for parties, holiday gatherings, sports watching…you name it! Love these! One difference she made hers with the packages of chipped beef lunchmeat. Don’t know if that’s even around anymore!

I am from Massachusetts and have been making these roll ups for at least 30 years with a slight difference. I spread the cream cheese on the ham slice and roll it up. I then slice the roll into equal rounds and insert a toothpick through each round and then a chunk of pickle on the top of each toothpick. Perfect finger food and always a hit in summer or winter.
Julie Evink says
Ooooo that sounds fancy! Perfect for serving these at parties!

My parents used garlic into the cream to make these ,but they would press garlic into the cream cheese and use either a half or a quarter of a pickle.
Julie Evink says
Ohhhh adding garlic is always a good idea in my book!

I placed the ham slice on a cutting board & patted it dry w/a paper towel. Next, I spread on the cream cheese. Then, I patted the whole pickle dry w/a 2nd paper towel. This was easier & less messy for me. Hope it helps others. I’m wondering, what would these taste like, if I used a whole sweet pickle? Love this recipe!
Julie Evink says
Great tips! I’ve had comments people use different types of pickles to switch up the flavors so I say go for it!
Kat says
I dry the ham and the pickles as well, it just seems that the cream cheese spreads easier and they aren’t so juicy when you’re trying to slice them. We make these every Thanksgiving Christmas and Easter. I use whole dill pickles as opposed to pickle spears and agree the ends that aren’t pretty enough are the best part to “sample“

Lol Julie!

Hi there, not a Midwestern recipe. I first had these in early 2000 in the lower Franconian region of Bavaria and they are marvelous.
Julie Evink says
So interesting!
Deb says
Thanks for sharing. I have made these for several years. Try using deli sliced roast beef and adding a little mustard or honey mustard in the cream cheese.
Julie Evink says
That sounds great too!

I saw a trick but haven’t tried it yet…. you take the cream cheese and put it between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll it thin with a rolling pin. Remove top sheet, layer meat then put paper back. Flip over, remove paper, lay pickles and roll sushi style then slice. I plan to try.
Julie says
Interesting! Let me know if it works!
