If I double the recipe for 12 servings, does it still cook for only 4 hours in the slowcooker? And will it turn out the same?
Julie Evink says
I think it will be done in 4 hours, but I’m not positive!
Allie-Cat says
Very easy, not too many ‘crazy ingredients’, delicious. Really good, and also doesnt taste like everything else I make in the crockpot= bonus. 🙂 I love to use the crockpot because I love to Not have a 1-2 hour process hanging over my head at 5pm (making dinner) … Id much rather do all my tasks for the day/house at that time, then just have dinner ready and waiting for me and smelling great! This recipe is a keeper (I commented on pinterest first time i made it, today I make it the second time… its only been 2 weeks since last time heheh.) We truly loved it. Again I had a little less ground beef than 1.5 lbs, but all else the same. (no wait thats not true! I didnt have celery last time nor this time, will try it with the celery in the future, I know we will love that addition)
Julie Evink says
I make this every 1-2 weeks too! I’m so glad you are enjoying it. Thanks for commenting and rating the recipe!
Mikayla says
I’d like to make this today, I’ve bought everything but the 8 oz can pieces and stems mushroom!
Can someone please tell me the brand name for the pieces and stem mushrooms?!?
Julie Evink says
Hi Mikayla! I usually grab the Green Giant brand.

I have an old hot dish recipe from my mom in Southern Minnesota that she called (not politically correct) Chinese One Dish Meal. It calls for cooked hamburger, canned soup and raw white rice along with other ingredients. I want to make it for a pot luck but an uncertain how to convert it to a crock pot. The original recipe cooks for about 1.5 hr to get the rice tender. Do you have any suggestions on how to time it for a crock pot. Thanks a lot!
I don’t want to share my MN wild rice at the pot luck it is too difficult to get here in TX! Ha!!
Sue says
I make one very similar but to the can of water I add 1 teaspoon each of Better than Bullion beef abd chicken along with 1 small can each of sliced water chestnuts and bamboo shoots. I think these additions pair well with the soy sauce.
Julie Evink says
Oooo I love water chestnuts and bamboo shots. That sounds fabulous!
Doti Foster says
I’ll be making recipe for the first time ever. Looks delicious! I use mostly Minnesota wild rice for some meals. Since Uncle Ben’s is precooked rice, I thought I would cook my wild rice first. Or at least, partially cook it before placing it in the crock pot with the rest of the ingredients listed in your recipe. I know it’s taking the “quick and easy” out of your recipe, but what do you think?

Michelle Sperr says
Hi Doti – I think that’s a great idea! I use fresh wild rice for northern MN often in my kitchen too. You’d want to cook it before, yes and I’d suggest using about 2 cups cooked for the recipe. Let me know how it turns out!
Brigitte says
If I’m using wild rice but not in a box, how many cups would I need to use ?
Thank you for answering me ! 🙂
Michelle Sperr says
Hi Brigitte – I’d use about 2 cups cooked of wild rice! Let me know how it turns out.
Heather says
What could you substitute the chicken and rice soup with?
Julie Evink says
I’m not sure there is a substitute for that. Why are you wanting to substitute?
Orlando says
What can you serve it with?
Julie says
Some crusty bread or a side salad would be great!
Jan Steinbauer says
What soze crockpot do you use?
Julie says
A 6-quart crock pot.
Dawn says
Can you provide this recipe using white and wild rice rather than Uncle Ben’s? I prefer not to use the boxed variety.
Julie says
I haven’t tried this with anything but the boxed rice. There is about 3/4 cup of rice in the boxed mix if that helps you to substitute white and wild rice. Maybe try 1/2 cup long grain white and 1/4 cup of wild rice.
Candy says
I found this under keto recipes… is it keto friendly?
Julie Evink says
I’m not familiar with that diet I’m sorry!
DeLorus says
Love love love this! I fix mine to my personal taste as follows: I don’t like mushroom so I omit them, double the amount of celery and also add sliced water chestnuts. I add a total of 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, a 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and a splash of worcestershire sauce. I pour it all in a 13 × 9 pan, cover it with foil and bake at 350° for 40 minutes. I serve it over chow mein noodles. Yum! Thank you so much for this “good grub” recipe.
Mary says
Thanks for the oven directions!
Julie says
Hope you enjoy!
Catherine Kellendonk says
Trying to understand the logic of browning the hamburger and veggies in butter and then draining off the fat (butter too!).
Julie Evink says
Ha! So this is what the original recipe said that I got from my sister-in-law. It does add some flavor to the meat, but honestly I skip the butter sometimes 😉
Catherine Kellendonk says
Do you drain the mushrooms? Doesn’t say.
Sue says
I do not drain the mushrooms and U forgot in my earlier reply that I also add 1/2 cup (before cooking) wild rice cooking rice according to directions.
