Why You’ll Love Crock Pot Chicken Wings
- You can use fresh or frozen chicken wings for this recipe! Just be sure to read through all of the tips so you get the best results.
- Once they go in the crock pot, they are hands-off! Let it do the work — you can cook them on high or on low depending on when you want to serve them.
- I’m sharing the special secret for making sticky wings. Put them under the broiler before serving to make the wings extra crispy! No one ever guesses that they were cooked in a slow cooker.
Ingredients for Crock Pot Chicken Wings
- Chicken wings – I can cook three pounds of chicken wings in my crock pot. You can use fresh or frozen!
- BBQ sauce – Grab your favorite barbecue sauce from the grocery store or even make homemade BBQ sauce for these wings. You could also use buffalo sauce if you prefer.
- Seasonings – Use a pre-made dry rub, or make one with simple pantry spices that you likely already have. Here’s what you’ll need:
- dried oregano
- chili powder
- smoked paprika
- brown sugar
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- salt
Can I use frozen wings in the crock pot?
You can totally cook frozen wings in the crock pot! However, they will release a lot more liquid than fresh ones which will dilute the BBQ sauce. When they are done, the liquid will be at the bottom so go ahead and discard it, add more BBQ sauce and then place the wings under the broiler, in a single layer on a sheet pan.
Can I use a different sauce on crock pot wings?
Use whatever sauce you want on your wings. Buffalo wing sauce is perfect for spicy fans, and garlic parmesan sauce is perfect for the savory fans. You can really use any kind of sauce you want on your crockpot chicken wings!
Can you cook other cuts of chicken in a crock pot?
Yes! I’ve cooked chicken legs and chicken breasts in my crockpot and they are delicious. Bone in chicken actually cooks really well in the slow cooker.
Helpful Tools
How to Make Chicken Wings in the Slow Cooker
- Combine all of the ingredients for the dry rub in a small bowl, then season the wings on all sides and place them in the slow cooker.
- Add the BBQ sauce to the crock pot and stir the wings to coat them evenly.
- Secure the lid and cook the wings on low for three to four hours, or on high for one to two hours. The wings are done when the juices run clear and the internal temperature is 165°F.
- Place the wire rack on the baking sheet, then lay the wings on the rack in an even layer and brush them with BBQ sauce. Broil them for a few minutes until the sauce is sticky and caramelized.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
How do you make chicken wings not soggy?
For crock pot wings, once they are done cooking, place them under the broiler for a few minutes. This will caramelize the sauce and dry them out so they aren’t soggy.
Pro Tips for the Best Crock Pot Wings
- To save some prep time for parties, cook these wings ahead of time and then keep them in the refrigerator. Just brush them with more sauce and then place them under the broiler before serving!
- Wash out the crock pot and then place the wings back inside and keep them on warm during your party.
- I love my homemade rub, but when I am in a hurry sometimes I use premade chicken wing seasoning. Look for it at the store if you want a shortcut. We also like to try different BBQ sauces to change the flavor.
- Grab ranch dressing and dip these wings in ranch before you eat them.

These were tasty, many people at the party told me they tasted exactly like meatloaf.😂. Could have been the sauce I used.

Oh that’s funny! I’m happy to hear they enjoyed it though!
Tim says
Don’t use!! Meat falls off the bone coming out of slow cooker. Better off frying, then broiling the wings! What a waste of chicken! Ruined my party!
